Philip
Thank you to the staff of Aquarium Co-Op for providing and maintaining this forum and all the content they put out to help us grow in this hobby. I would also like to say hello to all the members. For many years I maintained several Discus tanks and a few smaller community aquariums. I have since "re-tooled" and am switching over to much smaller species like the Celestial Pearl Danios, which I absolutely love. In "real life" I am a Watchmaker. I do not watch Television, movies or go on the internet very much and spend most of my free time enjoying watching my fish. It doesn't get any better than that.

I'm about to start my first ever Discus tank. Any tips from your experience?
Philip
Sir, The one thing I can say about Discus is, don't rush things. Take the time to let everything settle in and don't make unnecessary changes if you can. If they are happy in the water you have, make efforts to keep it the same without letting it swing. I did drop the conductivity (the hardness followed) when getting them to lay eggs but other than that, patients is the key. The only time I ever lost any Discus was when I'd try out something new and rush into it. It was always a disaster. Also, when I first started I thought having the perfect water was critical, then experience taught me they are much more tolerant than I thought. What I'm trying to say is, they will work with you, but don't jerk them around.

Yes it is. It's a quiet job which is what I like. The bad news is when you get old and the eyes are not as sharp or your hand not as steady it's not so easy.
