Mixed platies

I thought I might actually do some strains of these...I really like the scarlet red ones, and the red or red/gold wag tails. Since my guppies are all shades of blue mostly, I thought they might make a good counterpoint, but I keep telling myself to cool my jets, I don't have that much room!

Same! I flipping love platys, but my stocking levels are way too high right now (growing out some fish to sell.)

Platys are surprisingly underrepresented in breeding programs, it would seem. Like, breeding fancy guppies is very popular, but I am not familiar with any platy breeders. Perhaps we will join together and be the first and foremost specialists?! Lol But really, I wonder if breeders feel like platys aren't "challenging " enough?

I feel like they don't lend themselves as well to variation, but in my case I think that might be a win? I would like to have one thing that bred true in my mutt guppy grow out tanks. Considering whether that makes sense. (No. No, it does not!) If i had room for 2x the size of guppy tanks... like picturing a couple of 40 breeders, one with each strain of platies, selling all the ofspring in batches, and having female guppies in one and males in the other...Everybody would get tons of food...

Maybe next year, when I move to a larger place, lol.

I’m hoping to breed platys as my next fish project! (Probably a year out but hey, that’s fine. 😅) My plan is to select a male and three different females to see what I get. I do plan to be strategic about it if I can find anyone who will sell me single platys. If my health allows I may need to go on a fish road trip!

I have had a few different color variety of platys living together. The fry have been a whole mutt mix of color. These are my favorite variation. I have 5 like this and hoping to see if the offspring carry the coloration. MVIMG_20210111_220155.jpg.2e504cc06a82275e0cb0158723495497.jpg

Same here! After a traumatic, failed attempt to buy some platy online in early December (just before the PO broke down with holiday madness), I just went down to Ye Ol Local Chain Pet Store that sells fish and got an assortment. Basically any platy that caught my eye and seemed vibrant and healthy. Ended up with two orange sunset, one big orange one that I suspect is actually a female swordtail because she's kind of a boss b****, two turquoise, two gold twinbar, one red tail dalmatian (the only male in the group, strangely enough!), and one rainbow wagtail that's secretly my favorite.

So I'm expecting quite a mix out of this! I'll be sure to post pics once the babies grow out a little.

I know this is old, but wondering if you got any babies and if so, how they look?
