John Wood
Because of a video Cory did I am starting a new tank, with an under gravel filter what is the best way to cycle it?
AdamTill
Not different to a normal tank from that perspective. I personally think fishless cycling is a waste of time, but that’s just me and I don’t mind monitoring and changing water. So personally I’d use a light fish load
lefty o
a bottle of fritzyme, something from another tank, to get the bacteria going, then add a couple fish.
FishyJames
I used undergravel filters for years...nice clear water. Good luck. I cycled it by borrowing a cycled sponge filter from a friend for a few weeks.
Ken Burke
I like to do a gravel vac and use the mucky water (up to say 25%) to start the new aquarium. Really not that different that using a sponge from another tank, except is seeds across the tank instead of only in one part.
Tanked
I'm with @Ken Burke on this. You have to do a water change on the other tank anyway, so why not reuse some of it? People seem to overlook the water itself as a source for the bacteria. When possible I like to use power heads on the under gravel filter. You get more water circulation, oxygenation and the water clears up faster.

Filter squeezing s might help, but water itself is not a meaningful source of filter bacteria. It just carries waste for the most part, which is why keeping it isn’t all that useful

But the mulm sucked up from the graver is chock full of the little buggers.
