What did you get done today?

Played outside with plants and dirt for a couple hours, cleaned up Fairy Town, water changes, trimmed tank plants. Found out where my terrestrial moss came from. The sand bag I get my potting sand from was full of it today. Also, husband took me out for Valentine's dinner tonight to avoid the rush. I thought I would share my favorite restaurants koi tank. They didn't like the camera. I should have took a video. My oh my how these fish have grown in the last 2 years. So beautiful even though they're colors aren't really my cup of tea. The tank might be snug but the owner keeps it immaculate. If yall are ever in the Ocala Florida area hit Tony's Sushi and Steakhouse. It's a little pricey in my opinion but the hibachi is totally worth it. Regular tables/menu is average priced.

Went to 3 different fish stores to see who carries what at what price.  I actually found Apisto Cacatoides (I know that’s spelled wrong) at one, another had several other Apistos.  I didn’t realize just how small they are!  And oh my word, Endlers are tiny.  Nano fish really are nano.  I was thinking I’d do schools of various nanos but in my tank I have a feeling they’d be invisible 😞  Now I just have to wait for the quarantine tank to settle and then it’s fish shopping time!

Received my API Mater Test kit and it showed my water’s got a higher pH than originally thought, so I put back in a piece of mopani wood I’d taken out.  Did a 25% water change; used the water to set up the quarantine tank.  Planted new Octopus plant in an Easy Planter with a root tab.  My water sprite wasn’t rooting well; I’m hoping it’ll do better as a floating plant.  Did some minor filter rearranging.

Maintenance on the 45. I changed out the heater to a Fluval adjustable one. Scraped the front glass of algae - there wasn't much there but it was starting to inhibit the view a bit. Re-did the floating plant corrals. Still not happy but it's better than it was before (took up too much top). I will try to fix them another day. Did 15% water change. And the hardest part - cleaned the glass lid. It's hard because of the length, and I don't have a lot of room in my kitchen or bathroom to clean it (no other sinks in house). It looks so good now! I also cut a bit more of the plastic part since it wasn't cut properly the first time. My rasboras were traumatized by all the work and especially the heater change, since now they won't fit between the new heater and the glass, so I installed it sideways so hopefully nobody will try and get stuck. Lights turned off for a few hours so they can settle down. Its amazing how curious and cautious they are. They always inspect new and scary things in a tight formation. Tonight they'll get one of their favorite treats for dinner - frozen daphnia.

@mouseturd13, I'm in Arizona, too! I've thought about using cholla in my tanks, but I read that it breaks down "quickly" because it's a soft wood. How long have you been using the cholla? If a while, have you been able to determine how quickly it breaks down in the hard, alkaline water we have in this state?

I tried my hand at attaching Java moss to this decoration I bought a while back. I still have more moss and a rock to do which I will add to Cosmo's tank. I used super glue and then wrapped it some in fishing line which I will remove in a couple weeks. I'm hoping the moss will completely take over the decoration so you can't tell what it is. 20210217_132153.jpg.4cbc78f26eff34e09d8bf8abdf86e0b4.jpg

Got the backdrop on my newly set up 10g QT and the 1.5 jarrarium I set up a month ago. I've been meaning to do the latter for weeks, but it took until now to actually get it done for a variety of reasons. Made the backdrops out of black foam board, which I already have behind one of my 29g tanks and plan to put on the back of the second 29g when I re-scape it later this week.

So tonight my daughter and I installed the air pump and lines for her 3 gallon nanos.   🙂

Here are pics of the Nano aquariums on either side of her vivarium.

and here we installed the air lines because we were concerned of the sealed tops.

The single usb air pump runs both:

From the air pump it goes to a check valve then to a y splitter going to both aquariums.

The air lines are running to the back of the tanks:

Dosed my hospital tank with erythromycin and minocycline (Maracyn and Maracyn 2).

I have a Klein's butterfly fish that had signs of Lympho as well as cloudy. She's already been through a round of the two antibiotics and is doing great but oddly, two weeks later in a recovery tank she started to show signs of cloudy eye again. I was going to move her into the hospital tank today but decided not to. As I was about to net her I noticed her left eye was looking less opaque. Under guidance from a vet we're just going to wait out a couple days and see if the eye looks better tomorrow. If it's still cloudy over the weekend I might move her into the hospital QT.

I have her on a diet of vitamin soaked frozen food, specifically LRS Reef Frenzy which is a really clean food loaded with probiotics.

So I have this hospital tank running... but no fish and I used up 6 packets of antibiotics. Oh well. So if anyone is curious about saltwater fish keeping, I shot this yesterday for the vet:

@Dawn T I have had some of it in there for a while, at least six months, I haven’t noticed that it’s breaking down too badly. That’s just the smaller pieces from the coop. Those larger pieces are newer from a local place and are  a lot thicker and I haven’t noticed any breaking down on them yet. I would say if you want some try it out!

Checked the water parameters on the quarantine tank.  There was a slight increase in ammonia but after reading other posts it looks like the meds mess with the parameters; I’ll keep an eye on things.  I’ve got several extra marimo balls in the big tank so I might toss them in the QT to help things even out.  Fished out 1 dead fish 😞. The others all look good, though.

Yesterday I took my first batch of platy fry to my local fish store. It was my first time ever selling and I was super nervous. Would they like them? Would I "do it right"? Would the fish transport nicely and show well once we got there?  The store asked that I bag the fish in a gallon ziploc, and just for fun I used my USB nano air pump to throw an air stone in the bag for the 30 minute ride to the store. I think it helped make a positive impression when I delivered.

It was a great experience. The store owner LOVED all 10 fish and offered cash or store credit right out of the gate. I told her I'd happily take the store credit and would follow up soon to see how the fish did for her. She said she expects them to do great and hopes that I bring lots more, and said any other livebearers I wanted to breed would have a buyer waiting. I'm so encouraged.

I actually started breeding gbrs and was selling them to my lfs and then started breeding other fish such as guppies, redeye tetras, Beckfords pencilfish and white cloud minnows and they bought everything I could breed. That also got me a job working there. I also sell them gold rams to
