Easy DIY Python Attachment

I made this for siphoning out my ten gallon tanks on my fish rack. I wanted  something smaller to poke around the tank and clean with.

I made it with:

Brass fitting: 3/4 female garden hose x 3/4 female npt adapter, with a washer, very important.

White fitting: 3/4 threaded x 3/4 slip pvc fitting

I used a spare undergravel filter lift tube for a siphon tube. I cut a 45° angle at the end to better siphon off the bottom. I used a little Teflon tape on the threads.

I siliconed the tube into the adapter because it's not a tight fit but it's water tight.

If you don't have a spare tube a 3/4 pvc pipe would work. A little silicone in the slip connection would probably make it water tight without using pvc glue.

This is what I wanted. I wanted to be able to move the hook from one end of the hose to another without unscrewing anything. Now that this is modular, I will develop 3 or 4 different, siphoning modules depending on need. I can also add an additional length of python hose full of water without a drip now too as the orange part of the Gardena fitting has an auto-shutoff.

Here is the first module. The deep module. It is pretty much impossible to catch fish in the big tank when full. So this evening I will drain about 400 gallons out. This will allow me to catch all the angelfish tomorrow in a few inches of water (they have been sold).

I just started this siphoning by attaching a hose already full of water and then opening the valve. No sucking on the fishwater hose to get the siphon started!

Okay, I've got it. The ne plus ultra of Pythons!

  • Python hook with Python shutoff valve
  • Gardena heavy duty quick connect with water stop on female end
  • DIY gated intake/outflow made from undergravel filter parts
  • Always add 'the good' washers

Python can send the royalty checks for product development to @Daniel at the Aquarium Co-Op forum by way of @Lizzie Block

What's the little green thing at the end of the hose? I've been using netting over the end of my hose so I don't suck up any fish. This looks like it would be less hassle.
