Alina Posted Friday at 05:32 AM Posted Friday at 05:32 AM Hello, this is planning quite far ahead but I was wondering whether a low boy 50 gallon would be suitable for a school of tiger barbs (species only). I am also considering a 40 breeder but something lower would be very convenient for me since it's a real pain sticking my whole arm into the tank whenever I need to get something done. Thoughts? Definitely let me know if anyone has attempted this before 3
Fish Folk Posted Saturday at 12:51 PM Posted Saturday at 12:51 PM (edited) Here us an old reddit thread discussing pros and cons of lowboy tanks. Brief summary: they are easy to work in (only 10-inches tall) but may require a custom stand to raise up to a pleasing eye-level. You need to avoid fish that are jumpers. Barbs can be very boisterous… you’ll probably lose some over time. A full lid is essential. Consider Corydoras, kuhli loaches, bettas —> all are calm, or bottom-oriented fish. Because of its broad surface area, the water will evaporate very quickly. Beware of resting heavy hardscape on the tank. The bottom glass pane is more easily cracked than traditional tank sizes. But the cranky old aquarist in me also wants to add: you’re going to need to get your hands wet in this hobby 😉💦 Edited Saturday at 12:52 PM by Fish Folk 1
Tony s Posted Saturday at 02:12 PM Posted Saturday at 02:12 PM Jason Adams @ prime time aquatics has one for his centerpiece. Don’t know if you’ve seen his channel. It looks really cool. But he’s lost entire fish species from jumping before. Almost every fish will jump at some point. Even corys like to glass surf and jump. The no lid thing can be a real issue. If nothing else but just heat loss. Jason keeps his fish room at 80 degrees so can get away with it. He has also stated, even though he loves the tank, he probably wouldn’t get it again. It’d still be really cool to have though. A 50 gallon flat tank? I’m sure I could get a 50 cory shoal in there 😁 1
