FyaNyan Posted November 9 Posted November 9 (edited) Hello! I recently moved from my parent’s house into an apartment. I really would like to have some fish but have a 1 year old cat who enjoys chewing on cords, jumping on counters, and knocking things over. I concluded that the safest location for fish would actually be my closet…but there is no outlet in there. I’ve been wanting to dip my toes into killifish, and I know most species don’t require a heater, and I could do daily water changes to replace filtration. But not having a light seems kind of depressing and wouldn’t be good for plants (I would be thinking Anubias mostly). Here are my questions regarding this hypothetical killifish closet: (1) Are there any rechargeable, cordless, or battery operated fish tank lights?? I can’t do any drilling through walls or adding outlets in the closet because I am renting. I am wondering if something like this would work if siliconed onto the inside of the lid, facing downward. I could buy rechargeable batteries, too, to be more cost effective. (2) What are your general thoughts on making a fish closet? Have you ever done one or seen a successful one? I’d love pictures or any form of discussion on this topic. (3) Are there any other nano fish besides killifish that don’t need a heater? I’m doing research on all these things, and I may not even attempt this project (still waiting to hear back from the leasing office regarding aquarium policies, fees, etc…), but for now, in my absence of having fish, I like to enjoy thinking about them. Thanks for reading! Edited November 9 by FyaNyan 1
Administrators Cory Posted November 9 Administrators Posted November 9 You could do shrimp as well. You could run all your cords through pvc pipe to cat proof them. This is the route I would go with it. Run an extension cord to the closet.

I could leave the closet doors open, I suppose, but then it probably would defeat the reason to put the fish in the closet (my thought was to leave doors open when I’m at home, and close doors when I leave the house so that the cat can’t get the fish and equipment when I’m not around). I hadn’t considered pvc. This may open up options for other areas if they apartment. Thanks for the suggestion! Edited November 9 by FyaNyan 1
Schuyler Posted November 21 Posted November 21 What your describing is sort of the stereotype for killifish keeper: a closer full of plastic shoe boxes for being and raising up fry. That said, they normally at least have an air stone for adults and some type of light in those setups. Another option could be to do a small tank near a window but out of direct sunlight, put some low light easy plants in the like anubias and süßwassertang, and then do a pair of Nothobranchius, or Aphyosemion Striatum, or shrimp. The bonus there is that you'll actually be able to look at your tank. 2
