I have one Quarter size Black Angelfish in a quarantine tank with 8 mollies and she is getting her fins nipped off.  I have no idea who is doing it they're doing it at night when the light is off.

Yeah mollies may fin nip and Angelfish are prone to being nipped by fin nippers. I wouldn't be keeping them together, personally, but I've also never kept Angelfish and only have kept wild type mollies.

Unfortunately, when we decided to do a planted tank we didn't do the research on different types of fish to keep together.  I hate that I didn't, now I wish we hadn't gotten these two kinds of fish to keep together.  I feel so bad for my black angel!!!

Actually, I think the size of the tank is most of the issue. There's not a lot of room for movement or exploration. they may be perfectly fine in a much larger tank. at the very least, a bigger tank would allow the angel to get out of the way. And angels are still cichlids and are usually not push overs. They can defend themselves quite well.

Mollies and angels should be a decent pairing. Mollies are generally peaceful and usually not nippers. but the angel has now become their focal point. If you could shorten the quarantine time for the angel, that could solve the problem

You aren't the first to make this kind of mistake and you won't be the last. If they still don't get along in the larger display tank, You can try to return either the Mollies or the angel to the fish store and tell them about your fin nipping issue. Usually you can get store credit which you can use to get more compatible fish with.

Thank you for that advice, unfortunately I have two other of the same size Angels in my display tank.  I will keep this in mind though.

I have moved all but three mollys and my injured Angel into my 60 gallon breeder tank.  I want to keep her in the quarantine tank to be able to recover from her injuries. (She is taking a massive poopoo in this pic) Sorry.

She’s very pretty. I haven’t kept black before. Lots of koi’s, marbled. 2 platinum and one smokie pinoy. They’re my wife’s favorites. You just have to watch out for the pairings. They can get mean then. One of the tank mates I find I really like is the electric blue acara. I also have them with dwarf rainbows (praecox) and red tailed rasboras.

I have two black and one Koi.

Honestly, my mollies are way more aggressive than my allegedly mean American Flagfish. Poor rice fish are waiting for their pond to cycle and getting nibbled at night.

So, very probably a pair. Pairs are highly variable on temperament. I've had 2 koi pairs and one marble pair. The 2 koi pairs would claim a spot and keep everybody out. The male marble claimed the whole 75g tank and tried to push everyone out. He even kept the rainbows on the bottom. It got so bad that his pair had to be removed from the tank. Just saying so you know what you could be in for. Now Cory has said to keep them cold to eliminate breeding problems. Around 72 degrees. I haven't tried that yet, but a lot would depend on the tolerances of the tank mates

Hmmmmm, I am perplexed on what to do with the possibly a 3rd wheel!

Cross that bridge when you get there, it might not be issue. Or it could be solved with temperature or decor. As in adding tall plants in the back of the tank, something to break their sight.

Yes, I think that is what i'll do.  I have plants planted, they are just slow growing plants for low light.  I just hate seeing ANY ANIMAL in distress.  Stesses me out!!!!

And could be anywhere from mild to extreme. Depends on the fish. But angels have a reputation to be nasty when paired.  I am currently separating my pairs to single sex tanks with juveniles. And buying confirmed males from lfs. Am going to try a single sex tank with dithers and see how that works. Am very interested in the lower temp method though.

and you could always get a tank for breeding purposes though

oh nooooo, I only want to take care of one tank.  I already think I have too many fish, especially female mollys that will have tons of babies!  😞

Possibly not with angels in the tank. Depends on what you want, but with the angels they're mostly food.
