The Real Deal with Culling

I see and hear references to culling shrimp and other aquarium inhabitants. I DO know what culling means, but how do you cull shrimp or other inhabitants in the least cruel way (assuming you don't simply move them to another tank)?

Feed them to a predator that will just slurp them up. Or create a cull tank which includes animals that aren't the right color or shape... that being said if they can't swim right or have bent backs or other deformities they should be culled....

 

Lots of strains of fish we love today were created from healthy culls that just weren't the right color of tail shape.

I mostly move fish around; putting excess male guppies or deformed babies in another tank. To keep numbers in check, I have fed livebearers to my bichirs as treats, releasing them into the tank to be eaten.

I’ve used clove oil to euthanize snails.

I live feed culls to other tanks with fish that will eat them. Or they are netted out and offered in my hand to the rats, who snatch them out and eat them in seconds. Its over quickly for them either way.
