Debating on getting maybe some apistos, leaning towards cacatuoides but havent firmed up on what I want.  What kind of substrate would be ideal?  Sand/rock?  Lighter or black to make color pop?

I would say black substrate for sure because any fish looks good with black substrate. And I would rather get apistos but it’s your choice 🙂

Yeah I do a lot of BDBS and I really like it, was thinking it might be good for them.  I'm not sure I follow your second statement?

Gonna be honest I had a brain fart and I don’t really know what I meant. Lol sorry

I use gravel on my cacatuoides, and they are (and look) fine with it. Also, white gravel is fine with me, but idk if that matters to you.

Some people say you can put apistos on sand only. All my apistos are on gravel and and are breeding so maybe my fish don’t know any better.

Sand is not required. I breed apistos fine on Carib Sea Peace River gravel substrate. It’s small sized and they can dig in and rearrange it fine, as they like to do. This is my favorite non-black sand substrate. I think apistos appreciate (but dont require) something they can dig in and rearrange.
