Hey, Cory doesn't comment too much. He is a busy guy.

If it's okay though, I will help you out and I am sure others will as well 🙂 it is generally not recommended to keep any fish in a 2.5 gallon and I agree with that. I would use the 2.5 for some shrimp which are really fun to watch.

About can you keep a betta or snails in that tank

Snails would be good. Look into horned nerite snails. They are a little smaller and won't take over the tank. A betta will survive in a 2.5 gallon tank but they really need a bit more room to be happy.

I vote for scuds!  They will eat anything and are mesmerizing to watch. Plus they make a great snack for any fish that can fit them in their mouth.

Plants, ramshorn snails and cherry shrimp. In that order too. In my experience the plants prepare the tank for the snails and the snails prepare the tank for the shrimp. In fact, I like to wait until I see daphnia or other copepods in my tanks before adding shrimp. But that is just what works for me. I am sure everyone has their favorite plants, but I like bacopa, java moss and salvinia in small tanks.

Let us know what you decide!

Shrimp. Or shrimp and snails.

That, or you can do whatever you want. I’ve noticed several different posts about killifish or bettas or other fish in 2.5 or 5 gallon tanks. I’m not sure you’re really gonna find someone on here that’s going to tell you it’s a great idea. Most of the time, you’re going to get the same answers. 2.5 tank, shrimp. Or shrimp and snails. 5 gallon tank, a single Betta.

I’m not trying to be a jerk. Instead, I’m trying to do the exact opposite. Your hobby is your hobby and you can do what you want with it. If you wanna put a fish in a 2.5 gallon tank there’s nobody stopping you, but there probably won’t be a lot of people on here that will tell you to do it.
