Growing Dollar Weed As A Floating Plant

Recommended Posts

Yup, dollar weed from my pesticide free garden. I read on Reddit where some put regular old dollar weed (a.k.a pennywort) into their aquarium and let it grow. I mean, it is a water loving weed here in the south… not much different from the Brazilian Pennywort you buy for your aquarium. So, why not give it a try?

I washed it well and threw a piece with some root nodes into my 29g tank and si far, it’s sprouted 3 new pads. We shall see how well this goes!

Yes!! I have heard this stuff works great as an aquarium plant as long as it stays in shallow water... so keeping it as a floating plant sounds great!!!! Plus it looks so cute 🥺

It definitely depends on the variety, but from what I know, at most six inches deep. I hear a lot of time it grows best in saturated water that is occasionally flooded. That being said, I have no personal experience with this plant.

I do know, however, that hydrocotyle species are a marsh / wetland plant that grows on the shoreline and in wet areas. Again, this means it does not grow in submerged water often. At most, probably the stems are submerged and the leaves are emergent. This is also why to grow the best it needs co2 - as it usually grows in the air.

Once again, I have no personal experience with hydrocotyle, so either experiment on your own or consult someone else who does have experience!
