Nitrates and fertilizer

Recommended Posts

Water changes (IMO) are to re-balance nutrient levels. The plants we want to keep (higher level plants) are fussy eaters. They require a balanced meal, lower level plants (algae) is opertunistic. They just want nutrients regardless.... Re-balancing ensures your higher level plants keep eating which also suppresses algae. Once you get out of balance it gives algae a foot hold on account of higher level plants are refusing to eat!!! I'm sure this simple explanation is not 100% accurate, but it should help to understand why we water change.

Edit: Also all high level plants do not eat the same "meal". Some like more Potassium than Phosphates, others like more Nitrogen than nutrient X, you can see how this leads to nutrient in-balances pretty fast! Enter Algae!
