Streetwise Posted August 14, 2021 Author Share Posted August 14, 2021 I think my cousins built this pond in the 1990s. It was probably way cheaper than putting in a pool. Now I would never want a pool, because a pond is self-sustaining and does not require water treatment. I love shire life! Streetwise Posted August 14, 2021 Author Share Posted August 14, 2021 Thanks @eatyourpeas and @Patrick_G! They dug it very deep, 25 feet deep in the middle. Their kids, now adults, some with their own kids, added goldfish as kids, and I saw a half dozen. I thought that they might have meant Koi, but nothing I saw was longer than 4-5 inches. I am going to add my White Clouds, and some shrimp. I wonder if I will ever see them again. Obviously we get lots of snow, but we shut down for unsafe bus routes in mountain towns. Those are snow days. I got a new jacket and winter shoes to handle the weather, from a local shop in my village. I have my car temporarily in a town lot, awaiting the third plow of my parking lot since early morning. In direct sunlight multiple areas hit 34° today, but in the shade is negative so typical desert 40° to 60° difference between the sun and the shade😏. Luckily, got new boots for Yul, so my feet are warm😁 We had white out conditions on Wed & Thurs, and internet has been out since the 70 mph wind gust.😬 In other words, stay warm. Yes, western facing roof, maybe 30° pitch. Wind barreling in from the east. Shingles are black... the roof at the time looked like shades and gradations of grey. What’s not to love for a wild pigeon/dove? I wouldn’t even be surprised to find other species like sparrows mixed in there in little clumps. Almost all my fish (now that my last betta crossed the Rainbow Bridge) have been bred by me to not need heaters. My endlers continue reproducing as long as daytime temps are in the 60's. I live in the high desert, our night temps drop 40° or more. My zebra danios can tolerate night temps in the 40's, so can't go outside as early as the endlers. Rice fish are pretty tolerant of the cool temps... my blue guppies have not had enough years breeding with me to be outside until late May when the soil is consistently above 50° F. This is why no one can give a definitive answer. My daughter has some of my endler offspring in the horse trough, to control the algae growth. She started with a dozen last summer, by October she had more than she could count, and right now the stock tank has a heated hole in the ice so the horses can access the water and she said she sees endlers lazily swimming around the stock tank heater... so🤷♂️ 1 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
