Minifish
Hi guys, So I have made set up a large tank as I wanted to show the different colours of the rice fish (I have been breeding some but wanted a show tank of sorts to show the different colours). Anyways a local fish shop told me they had a colour I was looking for so I brought a group . They also had the daisy blue I asked if they would breed with the current species . I was told it wasn’t possible. I purchased a group to add to the rice fish community . They are currently in quarantine but reading up it’s a mixed bag of if they can breed hybrid’s . Has anyone kept both together? Should I add the daisy blues to the community tank or leave them separate? They look stunning mixed with the other but I don’t want to risk having hybrids I can’t get rid of ?
Fish Folk
If you are trying to breed and sell, pick one species. Avoid the possibility of hybridization for their health sake, and your reputation as a breeder. If you just want a tank full of “wildflowers” and really aren’t looking to sell fry, then it is your call. (Might disgust some aquarists) but extra fry can be fed to larger predatory fish, turtles, etc.
Cinnebuns
In general, species within the same genus can make hybrids. There are exceptions but that's the general rule. The first name is the genus name and the 2nd is the species name. Since these 2 have the same genus name, we can assume they can make hybrids. Hybrids within most genus tend to be unhealthy and sterile and should be avoided to breed responsibly. There are a few exceptions but it's safe to assume if they are not commonly hybridized, then the offspring will be unhealthy and sterile. Odd Duck
I would assume they can based on a few articles that mention it as a possibility plus that whole, same genus thing already mentioned. It may have variable likelihood but would definitely be possible in a mixed tank. The value of any offspring produced in the tank would be nullified for hybrids.
