Cinnebuns
I found this on the dragonstone and stems of my Amazon sword. Is this fungus? Is it an issue? How should I deal with it? This is the only tank without a snail and hasn't had one for about 6 months. Maybe that's the issue. The only cleaner in the tank really is 3 otos in a 29 gallon. nabokovfan87
I've heard of people dosing the tank with hydrogen peroxide for situations like this. Beyond that, I genuinely have no idea what it is. New to me.
Beardedbillygoat1975
It would be interesting to look at it through a microscope. I’m sure it’s got a mix of organisms in it. Your observation about snail’s eating this sort of thing is right on. Typically when cycling a tank this is when I’d buy or procure or move some snails into the tank. @nabokovfan87and I have been discussing Marks Shrimp Tanks method for resetting tanks midstream with H2O2 and I’ve done it twice in the kit too distant past resetting both my 60 g with this method and it’s worked. Mind you I was not treating for this but more bad juju from prior setups and tragedies. Also Roy aka @Seattle_Aquaristis very wise and a respected guru in our club and I officially defer to his recommendations!!

The tank has been setup for about 2 years. It just hasn't had snails in it because it is currently not safe for snails. I dosed it with fenbendazole about 6 months ago and am waiting on it to stop leeching to add snails back.

Seattle_Aquarist
Hi @Cinnebuns The only reason I believe I know what we see in the photos above is because it showed up in one of my tanks, my 75 gallon discus tank on some Malaysian Driftwood. I have had them in my tank for a couple of years and even when I scrub them off they come back after a while. They seem to have no effect on my fish which show no interest in eating them either. I have not seen them 'migrate' to my plants but it doesn't mean it can't happen. During a visit from some of our local aquarium club members, a couple of which have a strong background in biology, life sciences, and oceanography, they suggested that they might be freshwater sponges. So I did some research and confirmed that is what they appear to be. I had not heard of them prior to having them show up in my tank. Hope this helps! -Roy Edited July 30 by Seattle_Aquarist
