HelplessNewbie
In one of Cory's videos on sponge filters, he suggested a way to modify the sponge filter so that it can work with short water levels: cut a piece of pipe to half the length of the uplift tube, and fit it inside of the filter cage. What happens if: 1. we just cut the sponge in half and just used half the filter cage, since it is 2 pieces? 2. ignored the water level height, and just: a. let the bubbles flow out the top of the uplift tube? b. removed the uplift tube? I understand these make the filter less efficient, but how much less? And, in what way? Edited July 29, 2023 by HelplessNewbie
Jackson
Is it the nano ? You can break it down and cut the sponge .
HelplessNewbie
That's right, it's the nano.

Been a while since I did it . Guppysnail told me how to do it . Let me dig up the e-mail . On 7/29/2023 at 5:41 PM, HelplessNewbie said: That's right, it's the nano. "If you mean the coop nano sponge there are two sections to the inside. I take them apart and use it only 1 high and cut the sponge in half to fit for small tanks. Streetwise
FYI, the Small is shorter and wider than the Nano, and fits in my 3.5 gallon aquariums without the tube.
Odd Duck
I just leave the uplift tube off the top or I’ve cut the uplift tube in half before. If your tank is that small, it won’t matter if it’s slightly less efficient, it will still be plenty of filtration.
HelplessNewbie
Thanks! we now have it both ways: nano without uplift tube, and nano sponge at half-height*. Both are in separate 3 gallon quarantine tubs for light numbers of nano fish. *We placed the other half of sponge around the outside of uplift tube. I hope this wouldn't hinder the uplift; figured it might give the beneficial bacteria floating around more chances to get situated.
