Schuyler
This is going to sound weird because this is normally something that people are drowning in but I can't seem to get it to take hold. I've even put it in aquasoil in my display tank and it didn't really take off. I'm trying get a plant for breeding and grow out tanks. It's there a trick to getting it to grow?
Fish Folk
I never plant mine in substrate. Najas grows by uptaking nutrients in the water column. Indian swampweed (Hygrophilia polysperma) is an interesting alternative.
redfish
I had similar issues with mine at first. I ordered a few times and it just melted away. I finally had a couple little pieces left and moved them to a newer tank for my guppies and it finally decided to grow. I floated it and it decided to grow it's own "roots". Even the parts I moved took root in the gravel in a different tank. It's now in a few tanks.
JChristophersAdventures
@redfish Did you ever determine the reason(s) for this? I am always interested in learning more about plant parameters. Seems like so many plants really do grow better as floaters as long as there is plenty of nutrients in the water column.
redfish
Water parameters are all similar between tanks. Lighting would be my best guess. The first tank didn't have good lighting so it never took off I suspect. I've had other bad experiences with "Easy" floating plants so I'm happy this finally seems to be something that grows well in my tanks.

beastie
I have mine rooted and not rooted, in sand mostly. In bad lighting tank, no lighting tank, loads of light tank. Funny not that big of a difference, the high light tank has a massive boom and then stagnation again. I cut it recently to let it regrow and I believe the plant needs a lot of time. Almost two months before new growth appeared again. I think it is sensitive to changes more than anything and can do in any light, but needs the most light to have the prettiest green lush stars
