But i guess that is one of the fish keeping laws. Yea, I haven't been hatching out and feeding brine lately. Feeding routine for both tanks is still roughly the same. Randy Posted October 4, 2020 Author Share Posted October 4, 2020 So I am mildly embarrassed to admit that I purchased a WiFi sprinkler/irrigation controller from Home Depot about 2 years ago, I am pretty sure the purchase pre-dates my joining the Coop. Well, tonight was the night that I really kicked my fish room laziness into a new gear. Ironic that to enable myself to become more lazy, I actually had to stop procrastinating and do work. Well, the physical install took about 8 mins to mount the B-Hyve Indoor Sprinkler Timer, disconnect the wires currently connected to the Rain Bird stone age unit, and connect said wires in the new Protoss hottness. Once physically installed, I downloaded the app, which by the way, it appears there is a "Pro" paid version...not sure what that all is about. maybe you have to pay more to get a feature that actually turns off the sprinkler once running! 🤣 Took roughly about 5 mins after the firmware update to name my zones and setup the schedules for their daily runs. Not that it is going to come up all that often, but it is pretty nice to know that I can whip out my phone and fire off an ad hoc water change on any of my racks for any given duration. I have no idea how people like @Dean’s Fishroommanage having to actually be in their fish room and manually turn a valve to trigger a water change??😜. (seriously, ❤️ you Dean!) Mr. Ed's Aquatics Posted October 4, 2020 Share Posted October 4, 2020 I have dreams about not having to do water changes myself.... but for now I'm happy enough to have a Python to refill the tanks and a nice pond pump attached to the old Aqueon siphon hose to drain them. I'm trying really hard to only improve the fish room with money made from the fish room, but I have been looking at everyone else's water and air systems and think I might bend that rule for something similar to yours. Andy's Fish Den Posted October 7, 2020 Share Posted October 7, 2020 That Rain Bird unit you have may have a wifi unit available to add on and make wifi controlled. I just installed a Rainbird wifi controller at work on a sprinkler system for our football stadium field. I can turn it off or on from my phone, works great. Downside is entire controller was $900, but I'm controlling 12 zones, I'm sure most peoples fishrooms only need a few zones at most so could get away with a smaller control option. Tonight I said I was going to rip the bandaid and get some work done. I was so motivated to finish the first 20 long to 30 breeder switch that I fashioned up my own threaded 90 degree elbow to save a trip to Home Depot and keep the project going! Hey, you gotta find a use for all the PVC fittings you bought and never needed!😁 So far 1 30 breeder up, 1 more to go. I am pleased with how well it looks in the fish room already. Randy Posted October 29, 2020 Author Share Posted October 29, 2020 (edited) I had the joy of breaking down a leaking 40 breeder last night! 😑I had purchased 4 40breeders off local club members before I set up my fish room 2 years ago. Talking with @Dean’s Fishroom he mentioned he thought they were Marineland/Tetra tanks and that the history with those tanks includes a period of time with poor quality resulting in bad seals, and boy was he right! Lucky for me I had a spare Aqueon 40 breeder in the shed that is almost new. Just need to have a hole drilled for the overflow. I mean, what fish room having nerd doesn't have spare tanks lying around?? Here are my steps from last night: 1. Get pissed that a seal failed. 2. Be in denial that a seal failed and look for another source of the leak (ie overflowing AC110, unseated water line, etc.) 3. Accept that the seal failed and the tank has to be torn down and replaced. 4. Drain 25 gallons of tank water into a black tote. 5. Remove lid, AC110, ZIss filters, sponge filters, and all other junk. 6. Move a million Super Red Bristlenose, pea puffer, and guppies. 7. Gently remove cruddy, good-for-nothing, 7-year old tank from rack and fish room without busting it or any other tanks. 8. Move and drill spare tank. 9. Silicone seal new bulkhead for added leak protection. 10. Wait for silicone seal to cure, install drain line and move tank onto rack this evening 11. Add water and fish. 12.
