Pepere
They are so much more interesting in a school of 15 or so. They will display more interesting behavior that way over a school of 6…. apparently, mine do not read the internet… They dont swim around all that much, b and large they “hold station” almost all of the time. All pretty much facing the same direction and keeping distance from one another. Only really varying when fed… It is not that I regret getting them, but I am thinking of distributing them more among tanks, and having a more diverse community tank…. The ones in my LFS are crazy active. I assume maybe there is something going on that they potentially don't like?
H20 Plecos
How long have you had them?
Tanked
My Serpae are not "crazy active", except in the early morning or when feeding. They swim a bit and rest a bit. Checking the camera just now, all of the tetras are are actively swimming as the room begins to get brighter. Later today they will be a little less active. Being middle to bottom swimmers, I guess it is possible that their preferred swimming space in your tank is a little crowded. They like a hiding place, as well as swimming space. Barbs can be the same way. It's a species only setup which just means they don't have a reason to school/shoal. By what I can see in the photo they look to be together, but they just aren't afraid of anything and so their guard is down. I would think that if you add 1-2 more species of tetra you'd see a bit more movement. Maybe it could be as simple as adding some green neons or cardinals. Another option would be the emperor tetras. Considering how many you have, split the group in two and move each group to the community tank style setup. Very interesting! Fish behavior does change in a species only as well as a community setting.
Pepere
I have had the tank running for maybe 6-8 months. For most of the time the stocking has been 6 Serpae Tetras, 4 killifish and 3 American Flag fish and 8 emerald Green Cories. The 6 Serpaes have acted like this from the beginning. I quarantined an additional 8 Serpaes and added them, and there has been no difference. They feed active,y when food is added, and they compete with the cories for bottom wafers. On occasion a few will be in and out of the vegetation in the back, but the tank often looks like this with them…noeto where the flow comes frim and holding station. If I shut off the filters they maintain the same heading and position… I am contemplating transferring 6 to another tank and adding some Harlequin Rasboras. It certainly hasnt been what I expected from them.
Colu
My Columbian blue tetras do the same thing just seem to hover in the plants keep a little space between each individual every now and then chase one away that gets to close species of hyphessobrycon do this I think it just natural behaviour for them

I recently found that one of my heaters must have been giving off a small electrical current. My tetras (neon and Rummynose) were all hovering near the bottom similar to yours and when I removed the heater, all the fish immediately went back to normal. Pepere
I have all electrical devices that go into a tank plugged in to a separate power strip so I can shut everything off with a single switch before sticking my hands or tweezers in to the tank. I also have a ground probe in to every tank and I used an inductive meter to confirm no ac or dc current on the ground probe. It is just the Serpae acting this way. The Cories are behaving like cories oblivious to anything, and the killies and flag fish are acting normal other than giving the Serpae some Side Eye.. “Hey! Reds! Youre freaking us out doing that…. Cut it out…” Edited May 15 by Pepere
Pepere
I transferred 6 Serpae Tetras to another community tank. They are acting differently. Swimming around, exploring the tank establishing a new hierarchy, swimming in and amongst the plants. Original tank has 8 remaining. Their behavior remains similar to before. I am awaiting delivery of a Fluval Spray bar later this week. I plan on installing with a Fluval 207 with circular flow from back of tank to front, down the front and across the bottom back up the top. I also have some Harlequin Rasboras in quarantine to add in after Quarantine. I am curious to see if either alters their behavior. To my mind I have to think the Serpae that were transferred are happier than they were, but that could just be me projecting…
