Pepere
oh my goodness where was this video 14 months ago when I started setting up a planted tank! clear, succinct basic primer with easy plants. I was overwhelmed at first with plant choices andrea hed outfor help at Cust service asking for suggestions. The suggestion I got was to read the dscriptions on the site.. I I had no idea on how many plants, how many species, placement etc. this video would have been so very helpful. This is probably one of the best videos on the subject I have seen for a beginner… Great Job CoOp team, and Lizzie is a great presenter too. I would love to see more videos with her presenting.., 1

Galabar
Great video. My only complaint would be that it mentions waiting for the tank to cycle. Without an input of ammonia, it might not happen...

Sadly, based on some of the questions, people are still interpreting "cycling" as ammonia and lots of testing, instead of **seasoning** the tank. Galabar
The goal would be to get the sponge filter populated with nitrifying bacteria. Would that come from decaying plant matter, or Fritz "Fishless Fuel", or some other source? No matter the approach, I think there would need to be a minimal level of ammonia present (from wherever it comes form). Actually, it is exactly that. At some point the sponge filter in the above video will need to have a sufficient amount of nitrifying bacteria to process ammonia waste (from fish and feeding) that isn't directly consumed by plants. Plants will take up some, but the sponge filter will need to be cycled in the traditional sense (from various sources of ammonia that approach the level that will later be produced by livestock). That doesn't mean that decaying plants can't seed a sponge filter (with however long that takes), but it doesn't change the basic process that is taking place.
