KermitLyn
I’m new to having balloon Molly fish. It was looking cute in the assorted re-home fish selection at my fish store. I’ve looked online for male vs female, but I’m still not sure. What do you all think? Edited March 28 by KermitLyn
Fish Folk
Are you able to film a minute of it swimmingly around, upload to YouTube, and link below? My initial guess is female.

Fish Folk
Ok, well at just 13 seconds of video… I’m still going to stick with female. Males have a pointed gonopodium underneath… Females have instead a fan-shaped anal fin…
KermitLyn
@Fish Folk those are great info pics, thank you! This one’s a little camera shy. Finally got a little longer video. I think you’re right, probably female. Longer vid Edited March 28 by KermitLyn
KermitLyn
I keep a mixed guppy tank. I think I was being hopeful that I didn’t bring home another, an admittedly adorable, livebearer.

To complicate matters further, mollies and guppies can breed together and create hybrids, kind of like donkeys and horses breeding together and creating mules. I don’t know How often it happens, but it is possible.
KermitLyn
@PineSong thank you for that info, I did not know that. I hadn’t decided which tank to home her in after quarantine, the guppy free one might win now.
KermitLyn
And today she had a batch of fry. 15 and counting. Yep, confirmed female 🙂 https://youtube.com/shorts/0kD7CmOg68A?feature=share
