Scarlet badis mating embrace

These are the two “girls” I gave to a friend to breed with my boys I gave her. I had previously seen them do this with brightly colored dominant males and they both developed what appeared to be an egg belly and distended vent that would vanish after embraces with the obvious males. 
She kept these two separate for awhile to condition them. They have both developed a decent amount of color and display the same waggling behaviors as the obvious boys. See my journal for their entire story. 
This has led to more questions than it has answered. 
Could these be one of the fish that can utilize/ develop/ insert guess here both male and female sexual reproduction. 
Is that why we think we can never find girls?
