Phirefase
I am trying to figure out if the 60 Breeder tank from Aqueon/Petco will fit on a 4 foot rack from a big box hardware store and my google-fu is failing me. Wanted to see if anyone has done this before or if I will be stuck making a custom rack. Thanks
Janoš Bećar Pecaroš
60 gallons is 500 pounds. If the shelf can support 500 pounds you are good to go. However, if you add substrate, the weight of the tank will go up as rocks and sand are generally heavier than water.
Phirefase
I should clarify, the weight I’m not worried about, it’s the physical fitting of the tank on the shelf that I am curious about. The shelves that I’m looking at are rated for 1000lbs per shelf
Theplatymaster
@Phirefaseso the question is dimensions?
Phirefase
@Theplatymaster yeah the shelves are listed as 48” wide but the tanks are 48.5” wide

That said, sometimes things are measured "nominally", and the shelf might actually be a little wider. Is there a store that has a display model of the exact ones you'd be buying that you could go put a tape measure to?

I know that the Home Depot near me has the Husky shelving units that a lot of people use for rack on display in the store that you could measure it and see.

The shelves we have here at work are 48” outside to outside. Basically, the shelves fit in a 48” opening, so the 48” tank won’t fit in between the legs/posts.
jwcarlson
They do make different width options (though they're probably more expensive). I am honestly surprised that people put tanks on these shelves. I own a lot of them (the metal shelves with pressboard inserts) and wouldn't trust that loading on them personally.
