Jordino
Just went out and found some driftwood. Wanted to make sure that none of it was pine, etc.
TheSwissAquarist
Any idea what tree it came from? Sticks all tend to look alike unless you’re at the receiving end of my Grandmother’s!😳 Edited January 16 by TheSwissAquarist Have a nice day!

TheSwissAquarist
Does it seem to be detrimental to the fish at all?
JJenna
They all appear well-seasoned. Softwood will break down faster in a tank than hardwood. Were you able to break off any wood when it was dry? If so, it's likely a softwood. If you found it in a location where there was leaf litter it would be easier to identify by the leaves. The middle and bottom wood looks like it was infested with bugs, likely a beetle of some type.

They seem to like it. On 1/17/2023 at 7:40 AM, JJenna said: They all appear well-seasoned. Softwood will break down faster in a tank than hardwood. Also boiling will rid of all bugs and bacteria correct? I boiled all of these for hours, changing water every 20 minutes.

Also boiling will rid of all bugs and bacteria correct? Boiling will kill off everything. There is a huge chunk of spider wood in our turtle tank that has begun to break down. It can clog a filter if it gets to be too much, we have pre-filter sponges on our intakes. This tank is triple over filtration because of the turtle's bio-load but with regular vacuuming, we haven't had any problems. We've had it in place for about 2 years...so we may have to look for a replacement soon. Excuse the poor lighting, This spot is under Squirt's basking area.
