Fish Folk
I have been helping a local school set up an aquarium for education in a high school biology classroom. I gave a lecture on “Building A Healthy Biome” a few weeks ago. Today I added plants from my basement fishroom… Gone from bare to garden, here is the 55 gal tank, venturi powerhead, Aquaclear HOB, sponge filters, and lots of green… Next week I plan to stock it — all NANF: 4x Rainbow Darters (Etheostoma caeruleum) 16x Rainbow Shiners (Notropis chrosomus) 7x Southern Redbelly Dace (Chrosomus erythrogaster) 2x Banded Sunfish (Enneacanthus obesus) 1
Chick-In-Of-TheSea
@Fish Folk! That looks amazing! Did you use an active substrate or gravel?

It had eco complete already in. I should have mentioned: that tank is cycled already too!
Jungle Fan
@Fish Folk you kind of gave that away when you said a few weeks ago but this is great for a high school class. Did you include the students in the set up and planting process? Would be a great way to combine biology, chemistry, and math too with the nitrogen cycle, and to show them that what they learn in school actually does have applications in real life. Photosynthesis and lighting, so many applications for a biology curriculum.

Lecture before and after connects dots too.

Wish I could do something like that! Are there any kids who are really into the hobby?

Fish Folk
We’ve got eggs hatching! Set in a stone catcher back over holiday break. Checked after New Years… Had eggs! Not sure if Dace or Shiners… Well, today we’ve got “skaters”!

Really basic… Extracted Cyanobacteria in four samples in petri dishes, placed (1) under a cabinet in the dark (2) under a grow-light (3) under normal lab light when room is lit during school day (4) with a generous amount of hand-sanitizer. Evaluating each after several weeks.
