Crypts: I’ll show you mine if you show me yours!!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone I was doing maintenance today and was really admiring the beautiful leaves of my crypts. I have Wendtii green gecko which is massive and green lol I’ve had it for a couple years now it started as a small tissue culture and it’s moved around a couple tanks and has been spread out in several others. The second one I have is red affinis it struggled for a while but now it’s actually been doing really well and I love the color and patterns on the leaves. The two newest I have are pink flamingo which I’ve never tried I got a potted version a few weeks ago it’s already producing new leaves. Lastly I got a tissue culture of Nurii. I had it before but when I moved a few months ago it didn’t take well to the move and died. The flamingo and Nurii are both fairly new but I don’t plan on moving them ever!!! lol here’s some pics! Let’s see what crypts you guys have please 🙂BB0E7994-E4C1-444B-945B-9DC366F45505.jpeg.a5b07454a3eb12e156876dbcf495bfd6.jpegF275A02E-BD4B-4A34-9EB5-1148799C6103.jpeg.c7614d03abfed267452e337233fc998e.jpegD7A516FE-4359-4EE7-B588-8E313BB8B7F1.jpeg.e3bb565f7da75ac5c984cd63c32639ae.jpeg9C79F5D1-8B9D-4D10-8656-ED5CFE8FE598.jpeg.af9de7cc7b2eafb371c7fd9af8d5c5f6.jpegA31E9DA3-7CC8-4F9B-877A-29F8D1673FBF.jpeg.690756900cb9882348a5e74bea216166.jpeg74BF0868-B0B9-4CED-A4CD-CCF15892E909.jpeg.1318eb29e616ee29761b8486a1fad23e.jpeg244E4ED4-BE0C-42CE-A4C4-B8E867FEE682.jpeg.17ab9108a03543010ab8834d06659443.jpeg0BDC7FB5-F13A-4CBF-A846-FDA4D63C8F66.jpeg.9e5737f04c1e817d0823966b715b2a21.jpeg

I'll get some pictures when the lights are on tomorrow, so posting this to remind myself! I have a Wendtii Green, a Lucens, a Pink Flamingo, a Tropica...

*checks old ACO orders*

... a Lutea that's struggling a tad, but doing ok, and a Spiralis.

Your Pink Flamingo is killing it!

EDIT: Scratch that... the Lutea looks fantastic today after a fresh root tab. Don't believe its sob story, it gets fed.

Awesome I look forward to seeing some pics! They all look fairly similar when you order them so it’s nice to see what they turn in to!

I have a few but no good pictures. My tank desperately needs thinning and rescaping but i think i'll wait till May when i move (the new tank will have 3x the area for the same plants)... so i'll post pictures then. I will note that long term i've never had good luck with pink flamingo; it grows well for about 6 months and then will suddenly melt for reasons i do not understand. Maybe one day it will respawn but i have my doubt.

Here’s a pic of the Pink Panther and my tiny parva group - love them and they’re perfect for this tiny tank, but possibly the slowest growing Crypt ever.  Pay no attention to the small clumps of hair algae.  It’s getting another treatment of peroxide tomorrow.

No worries I know I put people on the spot asking for photos! I’ll have to keep an eye out for your future posts! Interesting about the flamingo if that’s the case I have about 5 more months to enjoy it 😂 hopefully it sticks around longer!

Very nice! Looks like you have quite a bit of the pink variety in there was it multiple pots? I love parva too very slow growing lol I have some in tissue culture in my 5g it is absolutely tiny compared to the potted version I have of it. Algae is a constant battle no need to apologize it still looks great! Also love your Anubias it looks nice and green!!!

-Cryptocoryne wendtii Green Gecko

-Cryptocoryne willisii

-Cryptocoryne parva

The Cryptocoryne wendtii Green Gecko is the one that changes from bright green to what you see in the middle of the tank and I have to gove them a severe trim every three weeks, this picture was taken right after one such haircut. The parva, and willisii in the picture with the Bolivian Ram you have to plant as many as you are planning to have because they just don't spread, even after two and half years.

Great looking tank love it packed full like that! Your Bolivian Ram looks like he enjoys all the cover too! I think the only crypt I’ve ever had that had sent out runners and made baby plants is my wendtii. Thanks for the pics!!!

The Pink Panther was 3 pots but this was essentially one pot’s worth.  I can’t take much credit for them.  They were taller TC pots than usual so they had good starts.

The parva is at least 3 pots worth (all of it in view 🤦🏻‍♀️) and some melted, but believe it or not some has reproduced.  You see that clump near the left that is just to the right of the plants most effected by hair algae?  That wasn’t a clump when planted.  It has turned into a clump.  The same for the clump in the middle.  Growing up a storm, they are.  Massive by parva standards, might even be an inch across!  😆 😂 🤣  Might have to write that up as a first for parva.  😂

Seriously adorable and perfect for this tiny tank, like I said, but maaan, it sure is slow to grow!  Not just because it’s tiny, either.  It’s super slow to reproduce, at least for me.  I’ve had that parva in the tank for about 1.5 years.  Let me find a pic from when I started it.  Tiny tank has been through it.  I’ve struggled more with this tank than with any other tank I’ve done.  I put a wood piece in it that I thought looked great, but I finally decided it was just too much organic matter for the tiny tank, even with massive overfiltration with loads of sponge filter.  But you can see the tiny parva (one tissue culture) that I started with.  I lost some since, and added 2 more pots of well-grown adult parva since then, maybe a year ago?  After I pulled out the wood piece and added more plants. I only just gave up on keeping Echinodorus vesuvius in control in the tank and added the Pink Panther a few days ago.  We’ll see how it goes.

First pic is from September 5, 2021 and I think this is when I first set up the tank or close to it.

Next pic is February 4, 2022 after I pulled out the wood and got the tank somewhat sorted out.  The E. vesuvius is already showing that it’s going to be a pain to keep under control in such a small tank.  It does give a nice idea how much the Anubias nana ‘Petite’ has grown, though.

Finally a closer view of the “exploding” growth of parva.  😂

You aren’t kidding about the parva that’s awesome and also mind blowing at the same time lol. Definitely a great plant for easy maintenance! I’ve always seen people wanting a carpet of it which would look awesome and be so easy to care for but the amount of pots you need to start with could get expensive quick depending on tank size. My parva in my tank with co2 has gotten much more full than when I first got it but hasn’t sent any runners like yours yet! It’s also only been in there about 6 months or so. Small tanks can be a handful sometimes trying to keep the water great! The good thing is maintenance is quick and easy on them though! Do you have any other tanks?

I have 25 tanks all together, from a pair of 100 gallon tanks that flank my TV, down to 1 and 1.5 gallon culture jugs that only have scuds and snails.  I have 4 x 5 gallon tanks are the smallest with fish in them and the guppies are mostly to prevent any mosquitos.  I’ll be moving some of the guppies today to prep the tanks for new live food cultures (various species of water fleas) that are coming my way.  Most of my tanks are 29 gallon or less.

Great pics thanks for sharing. I love the variety! The tropica is definitely an interesting color I actually like it a lot!! I have a wendtii red but the green gecko consumed it so it’s very difficult to get a pic unless I stick my hand in the tank and move the green gecko out of the way. How long have you had the spiralis for?

Some newer grow out / “don’t know what else to do with them” tanks for crypts with various nurii, jacobseni, and purpurea split up by species 😄

The Spiralis is probably only a month and a half or so.
