Tank Dimension Preferences

I’m stuck between a 65 gallon or a 55 gallon due to space available and current equipment. 
 

Negating the obvious benefit of the added 1 gallons a 65 has over a 55, would you prefer a longer tank that’s not as wide OR a tank that’s much deeper in depth but not as long? 
 

Long rectangular 55  or square-ish 65?

It's just a personal preference or what you have room for. I personally like longer tanks over deeper tanks.

If I could fit 4' length, I'd do a 75. If I had to do a 3' length, I prefer a 53 (not always easy to find) over a 65, although 65 gallons are OK. That's exactly what I did in my living room because I could not fit 4' length. I don't like 4' length tanks being only 12" front to back, I prefer 18". I'm OK with 30 or less being 12" front to back.

I guess what I mean, more specifically is, it it better for fish to have more length vs depth?

It really depends on what fish you are keeping in the tank. What do you want to stock it with?

Tropical community tank. Tetras, guppies, Molly’s, corys

It really depends on the fish you plan on keeping. Some fish like Angels will tend to use the vertical space while Rainbows will use the horizontal space more. Just my 2cents.
