PineSong
I think it's important to distinguish between "not being fed" and "not eating". Some fish who aren't being fed are literally not eating--if they require live food to be added day by day instead of residing in the tank with them, or they only eat fish food, for example. But fish who will also eat algae, biofilm, shrimplets, baby snails, fish eggs, etc. may be eating just fine although nobody is putting fish food in the tank. Sometimes when I have not fed the tank for 12+ hours I will see one or more platies with a long strand of poop--so I can rest assured that they are finding stuff to eat. So we might think we are 'fasting' the tank but we're really just "dieting" the tank for those fish.
