k0olmini
Hey to anyone out there who keeps apistos, can do well in hard water? My LFS strongly advises against it, yet I'm seeing some people say don't worry about hardness. My current water is like 300 ppm.
anewbie
Apisto is a genus; individual species have different level of flexibility. You should talk about a specific species when asking this question.

TheSwissAquarist
@tolstoy21 has done some Apistogramma breeding, maybe he has some recommendations?
tolstoy21
300 ppm is about 16 - 17 dGh, if I'm doing my math correctly. That's a tad on hard side of things. I've kept them fine in around 9 dGh (and lower). I can't really speak towards anything above that. Edited November 23, 2022 by tolstoy21
anewbie
You are pushing the limit but if you want to experiment with a fish borelli is probably your best bet; but i would not. There are some wonderful ca (central america) dwarf cichild that will do better though your water is still pretty hard even for them. An example of such a fish is rainbow cicihld (there are several others some a little smaller others a little bigger). If you want a rock type landscape there are several african species to consider.
