I have been letting two tanks grow out a bit in order to harvest stems for this one.

I will be placing an order for some anubias and rooted plants this week to round it out a bit.

Looks like a fine beginning. Nice substrate. Are you using a UGF? That uplift in the back reminds me of one. Keep going!

Yes. I have become quite enamored with undergravel filters.  With box filters deployed from time to time if I want to use activated carbon and or filter floss to polish.

substrate is safe t sorb with mesh bags of aquasoil  in areas with a cap of activ flora black for aesthetics.  It proved vet nice to plant in.

the dark reddish brown of the safe t sorb was somewhat appealing in its own right.  I could see using it all by itself as a substrate.  I found that sieving it through a window screen first,(while wearing an N95 dust mask) and then rinsing what did not pass through the screen through a screened colander worked the best at cleaning it and removing fines.  Screened dust reserved for oil spills…

safe t sorb will crash your ph if you have low kh in source water.  Next morning my ph was in the low 4s. I added 4 teaspoons of baking soda in 29 gallons before it finally stabilized.

The Activ Flora instant cycling claim strikes as about as effective as all of the bacteria in a bottle products.  (Not very).  My tap water has 1 ppm ammonia in it.  48 hours after filling the tank, 1 ppm Ammonia, 0 nitrites 0 nitrates.

I didn't buy the activ flora substrate for any of its claims regarding instant cycling or nutrients though.  Just wanted a fine grit black substrate without paint.  But, given the claim, I had to test it….

Yesterday, in addition to adding plants, I cleaned out a few filters from other tanks in this tanks water to seed it.

Can’t wait to see the end product!

You can’t swim in the same river twice.  The water is constantly changing, the course of the river is subject to change, the fish and plants change.

Same in an Aquarium, subject to constant growth, trimming, change, subject to the whims, skills, and dilligence of the keeper.  The end product only is achieved on tank teardown…

In that case… do you think that ‘current objective’ would be more appropriate?
