My wife and I casually bred Guinea pigs when we were kids. My daughter went all out when she was in grammar school.

We used to do Dalmatian puppies for a while, which were almost as cute as those Guinea pig babies. Here’s our male, Polo, who I think is 2% Spaniel and 98% Dalmatian.

Trying to get my dart frogs going. It’s a journey.

And I have a couple gonatodes geckos that I’m also hopeful for. Dude below is pretty much full size.

Hot tip: terrariums fit really well on aquarium shelving. 🙂

I’ve always wanted to keep geckos! (My parents said that nothing which had scaled and lived on land was allowed in the house😢)

That's a nice-looking queen in the last picture.  I worked for B Weaver Apiaries for several years in the 90's.  Maybe you've heard of them?

Oh, and I breed cows.

I have heard of them.  There's another Weaver too, right?  R Weaver, maybe...

I prefer darker queens like the one in the first pic, but I am not too picky.  As long as they're calm and productive, I'm happy.  And it's not like I'm running some big breeding program.  One year I reared about 200 queens, but I'm winding my little operation down even farther.  This year I only made maybe 30 or so.

What kind of cows?

I'm curious about the significance of the painted thorax on that queen.

Two purposes - easier to spot them and to track their age.  In honey bee queen marking there is a "standard" based on the last digit of the year.  In this case that queen is from 2019.  Everything I marked this year was yellow.

May be an image of outdoors

I've got this card in my wallet, even though I have it memorized.  Forgot about it until now. 🙂

Be (blue)

Warned (white)

You (yellow)

Require (red)

Gloves (green)

Is the acronym starting with year 0.

Yes, there's R Weaver.  The two businesses are on adjoining property, and the owners are first cousins.  Until about 25 years ago it was all one operation, but the cousins don't get along well so they split up.  It's only about 1-1/2 mile from my house.

Brangus and Hereford.  Like you with the bees, I've cut back in recent years.  Ten or twelve years ago I had around 60 cows and 3 bulls.  Now I'm down to 15 cows and one bull, and am giving serious consideration to getting completely out of the cow business in the next few years.  Getting out in all kinds of weather to take care of them isn't as much fun as it was when I was younger, and while he's always glad to help me, my son isn't really interested in carrying on with them.

I'm headed to get our new Dal pup tomorrow.  I've only ever had dalmatians.  My last one died 4 years ago.  We are finally ready to love one again.

Well here is our new boy - Argo.  It's odd for me because I have only ever rescued dals from pretty bad circumstances.  But this dog is from a small breeder, so I know all sorts of medical stuff, and how his life has been (pretty good!).  It's also odd for me because he clearly misses his pack.  When I got rescues, they were happy to go home with me - sort of an "wherever, anywhere is better than this last place!" sort of vibe.  This dog misses his family.  He'll need extra love until he settles in.

I've had him for just a couple days, so...  Nope.  Given that my last dal had hip issues that clearly hurt him at the end (we'd hiked, jogged, walked, and explored thousands upon thousands of miles together over his lifetime - he had his paws in the Atlantic and Pacific; saw the Mexican and Canadian border areas), I am curious though.  I'll DM you.  Thanks!

It's the Yellowstone of the bee world! Literally every family could be its own TV drama, couldn't it?

As a kid, I raised hamsters, mice and rabbits as part of a merit badge project. Mom drew a line at rats. Some of the rabbits were pets, some were sold or traded for beef. Neighbors would buy bags of droppings for fertilizer. Long before indoor rabbits became a thing, ours took car rides, and were free to roam as far as their leash would let them.
