Aspidoras spilotus C125 / Badis badis adventure

Went to Keystone Clash. Saw the wiggliest fish ever. So I got 6. I had not intended to buy fish. I have no room and no tanks.  Could not resist. They are QT in my plant clipping project tank with 3 guppy babies as sentinel fish.

I know only what I found on the net after I got home 🤣. The girl breeds them in hard water 7.8 ph so I knew they would be fine.

New fish alway group and hide for a bit. These are no different but they grouped and “hid” along the front glass 🤪. This morning I went in to turn on lights but there was so much mayhem in this tank I had to look before I turned them on.

I never thought I would say this but these kids make corydora look inactive. They looked like those playhouses with the plastic balls being blown all over. I went to siphon up some leftovers and these kids are fearless. 1st morning in the tank and they were investigating the python. Up and down the tube.

Anyone keep or breed these?  Share your knowledge please. Anyone just curious chime right in. Let’s learn together 🤗

Not sure what you mean with the bulldogs.(never mind I just saw what you meant)  Here is the planet catfish and seriously fish listing. I’m in love also.
They know the food dish already 🤣D7DA6B8F-CE09-43BA-82E5-D039E79A0CDD.jpeg.e9a50681d0e0024c068a84c9f122f557.jpeg

I remember seeing a video a while ago it mentioned that a lot of the aspidoras in the hobby are hybridized  as it difficult to tell a lot of species of aspidoras a part

Prior to seeing them wiggling in the bag on the table I had never even heard of them. Do you know what they hybridized with?

They hybridized with other species of aspidoras as a lot of species look very similar  they readily hybridize when kept in same tank together

@ColuI think this was farmed Aspidoras as the Germans have gotten a taste for them and some of the South Asian farms started breeding them and as you made clear not caring about whether they were hybrids.

Most hardcore Catfish people keep the lines clean and I’ve seen posts recently from Dan’s Fish and on some of the catfish forums about pure Aspidoras. In general they are the most spastic of all the corys. Fast swimming, social, gregarious fish which is what you see in the video @Guppysnail. They also stay relatively small and can go in 20-40 g tanks which makes them approachable for a lot of people unlike the chonkers I just got the CW028s E20DE52A-200A-4E45-B1CF-6D178740CBD5.jpeg.f92c3ba55998b0670d82ac14b2dd1735.jpeg

Congratulations @Guppysnailreally cool Corys!

When unboxing at my LFS, I could hardly tell the difference between bag of Aspidoras 1 and bag of Aspidoras 2. Or was it 3? Or 4? 5? 6....

These kids recently went through a growth spurt. They still look like they are displaying breeding behavior but I’m not certain. They eat EVERYTHING.  They don’t just snuffle around in the gravel like my corys do.  They nose dive in wiggle and shove gravel out of the way until their entire head is buried. They also eat baby bladdersnails off the glass. So they might be laying at night then eating the eggs. 🤷‍♀️

Have you thought about adding some spawning mops to see what you get??

I never use those. I use globs if moss and tons of plants. If they are not spawning and artificial mop is not going to encourage spawning. They only make collections easier. If they are spawning and eating the way these things wiggle through moss they will eat them from the mop.

Was able to get a small video of what I meant by digging. They do this headstand dig all day long!

It's a blur, but I can't remember if it was the pandas or the black corydoras that had similar behavior.  Lack of sleep I guess and I just can't remember!  Sitting here drinking coffee and it's 11 PM. (long story, lol)

I have seen two main behaviors, not constantly, but the bigger the herd, the more often I've seen it.  In the 55/75G in the sand they would "hoover" pretty much all day. They get food, but tail in the air and they literally just do that all around the tank.  That was definitely the pandas at that time.  In the newer setups that I have now they are a lot more reserved, but I have seen them do that same thing when they are fed a food they really, really like.  Doing that 24/7, I could only imagine how fun and goofy that species would be in a massive herd on some sand.

I am glad I randomly stumbled upon this thread.  I absolutely LOVE to learn more about these species and this type of fish.  No idea why, but I just really, really enjoy them.

First eggs 🥰

Just curious on what they layed the eggs on? I see the photo, but not sure what the black thing is.

Sidenote, You had mentioned in the OP and some of the initial posts how there isn't a lot of information available.  I spend the weekend watching a livestream / auction with someone that might be able to help with some information.  They did auction a species very similar to the one you have.  They also mentioned how they are much, much more active than corydoras generally.  The person in question is Anthony Mazeroll.  Let me grab the details for you.

https://www.amazonresearchcenter.org/
amazonresearchcenter@gmail.com was the email they listed for questions / inquiry on the stream.

The research center is focused on peru, listings I am seeing for this are:
https://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=384

From brazil.  I would imagine given the crossover this person might be able to shed some light or something, very knowledgeable and helpful from what I saw on stream over the two days!
