Nanci B
I have two QT tanks going right now. I was able to get some used media from a friend in the form of ceramic rings but both filters—(Tetra Whisper) died on me. The media is still wet. How long until the bb dies? Pepere
In addition to keeping wet, the bacteria is also in need of oxygen and food, and appropriate water parameters. Its not just keeping them wet to keep them alive. keeping them exposed to oxygenated water is likely the most important aspect. They will survive for close to a month in oxygenated water even without ammonia to metabolize. I would be worried about the viability f beneficial bacteria on media in an enclosed chamber without water flow and exposure to oxygenated water for 6-8 hours.
Nanci B
Thanks, I will toss it out. I am moving those fish today anyway, and that tank also has plants, air stones, and some substrate. Appreciate your answer! I need to figure out a way to keep a QT filter going without cluttering up my 75 which is my only tank.
Pepere
While I would have concerns, that doesnt mean I would abandon it after 6-8 hours. It mostly means I would frequently and carefully monitor for Ammonia and Nitrite and have a plan in place to deal with that.
