Kyle_B
Hey, about a week ago I ordered some Java Fern from aquarium co-op and I was wondering if it was normal that the Java Fern browns initially when introduced to a new tank. I would like to hear about other people’s experiences and tips if this isn’t a common problem.
Guppy Guru
So it will kind of brown a bit, but shouldn’t much since Coop does water raise before selling. Do you have other plants in the tank as well, what light are you using, and any ferts? thanks!
Kyle_B
Yes, I have other plants, to name a few I have Amazon Swords, Vallisneria, Scarlet Temple, Crypt, Dwarf Hairgrass, and some Red Root Floaters. I’m using the NICREW ClassicLED Plus and Easy Green for fert. Also the Crypt is melting but it’s roots are fine so I’m not concerned with it Edited October 26, 2020 by Kyle_B
Guppy Guru
Yeah just sounds like a bit of melt back nothing to worry about! Post a pic of the tank sounds awesome!

Mitch_ScruffyCityAquatics
I have Java fern and it is kind of picky on water. I bought some from the co-op and some from a local store. Both browned in my water. Not like melt, brown spots. If it browning in spots it might be that it needs additionally potassium. I was in a discussion on here with someone else about Java fern when @Irenesaid she had that problem and potassium took care of it for her. Kyle_B
Interesting, that could be it and I’ll see what I can do to add additional potassium. But also isn’t a lack of potassium due to low minerals in water? I’m using well water and I don’t think it’s low in minerals. Mitch_ScruffyCityAquatics
Not necessarily. Could be heavy in other minerals and not potassium. I am currently trying to decide how much Easy Green I should be using so I haven’t grabbed a potassium test or ferts. I’m hoping the potassium in Easy Green will be enough once I level out my needs.
