Nz1986
Hello. I have been having an issue with guppies lately every time I buy a new one or two they die within a week. They are from the big box stores and never the best starting out, they seem like they are doing fine when they get acclimated but within a few days their stomach start to sink in then they pass away. Is this a problem with internal parasites?
Gwallace
Could be so definitely quarantine and treat...but honestly live bearers mass imported by the chains are just terrible in general. Find a source for local bred Guppies and you will have much better luck. The last ones I bought came from Michaels Fish Room. They came in great. Nz1986
Thanks they do go into a quarantine and that’s as far as they make it. It’s just sad seeing it happen to all of them. In the past I used to have good success with the chain store guppies.
BrettD
Yea there's something wrong with the chain store guppies. Not sure what the situation is exactly. It wasn't great ten years ago, but it seems much worse now.
lefty o
the guppies form chain stores do tend to be on the weaker side
Nz1986
This is the first time I have ever had to restart with guppies in about ten years or more and I will say I am disappointed.
Melkor
Try to find some locally bred ones. Heck, could probably find someone giving away a bunch of offspring!
quikv6
You may need to treat them with Levamisole or Fluebendazole for wasting disease. It is somewhat common in livebearers.

Just be forewarned, if you watch Michael's Fish Room unboxing videos on YouTube, he's now importing and reselling imported guppies more than breeding his own. This is pretty common with many hobby breeders. They end up with too many customers and to meet demand they start importing fish rather than breeding fish. It makes sense for them as they can keep customers happy by always having fish in stock. It's not a bad thing as long as the fish you get are good fish, but they may not be "locally bred" even if bought from a local breeder.
Biotope Biologist
This sites partner Aqua Huna has quite a few guppies in stock and if they are anything like the co-ops they are extremely healthy and ready to breed. Livebearers shouldn’t be anything other than hardy. If that’s the case than they are having supplier issues.
