Filopaludina martensi snail adventure (White Wizard)

Update

Still no luck breeding and only 2 show shell growth.
I have tried many combinations of feeding additions and such. I am now working on temp adjustments.
These guys reportedly do well at slightly higher temps than other snails. I am up to 77 degrees this week. I do notice them being slightly more active and I saw what looked like mating attempts once.
I will wait a week or two and if mating has not increased I will go to 78.
Even though they appear to be elderly I just need one boy and one girl baby to really get breeding these guys started.

Thanks for posting your journey and all of these pictures! I have three white wizard snails in a community tank, and I'm pretty sure there are a few babies in there - there are mystery snails as well but the wizard snail babies look more pointy rather than round at the small stage. Will share if they grow at all. I'm curious to see if the babies turn out white, I've read a few accounts of people trying to breed them and not getting the white color morph, only brown.

Thanks. These guys the new growth is brown. My understanding is they don’t turn white until they are older.(there is to little reliable info for me to say that conclusively)
What temp do you keep them. I’m up to 78-79 and I’m seeing some mating activity finally. I’ve adjusted everything else so now I’m working on temp. I keep snails 74-75 so I’ve been going up from there.

As a breeding project these were the MOST BORING things I’ve ever tried. I still have no babies. I was starting to really dislike them due to maintaining a tank just for them and they move SOOO SLOOOWWWLY so were not very interesting.

I moved them to a community fry grow out. It’s a 10 g I move fry into when they are big enough to eat eggs and other fry but not big enough to join adult groups.

Right now there is 6 Aspidora spilotus babies. 10 CPD babies. 1 panda baby. Ike my stunted growth guppy boy. Neocaridina. 2 juvenile and 1 female senior citizen magenta mystery snail with breeding shell damage. And now 6 White Wizard snails.

As additions to a community tank I’m starting to really enjoy them again. Every time I look they are being cute. Loads of breeding activity going on so I think they are actually happier as well.

Today after errands I had intended on closing this thread out. @TeeJay adopted the WWsnails. I determined they were either old or just not happy in my tanks.
My errands included getting crickets for my frog at the LFS. I walk in and what do I see being added from a bag into a tank. Yes WW snails. They were just a tad smaller and a tan-ish color mostly. I could see where their shells were starting to turn white. They are born they are brown from photos I seen on the net.
I seen them instantly digging into the sand. I was at the shop for about an hour while they unboxed their fish delivery (yes I time my visits so I get to see the incoming critters each week) They dug and roamed and dug and were so happy playing in the sand. I determined it was probably older age and unhappy. I was so bummed this was the first snail I ever tried to breed that I had no success with.
One of my other errands was shipping the remaining Spixii snails in the one tank and GBR babies housed with them.

SOOOOO…empty tank

I bought all 13 and a bag of sand 🤣 I need to get plants. What’s in there is just random clippings and such I had.

The adventure begins a new 🥳

Wizard baby. I only added them yesterday

Whatttt!   This is crazy!  What kind of sand did you end up going with? It looks nice!

How is there a baby already? The stork must’ve flown that in and kerplunked it in your tank.

I guess it’s more like super tiny gravel

They are borrowers but I have gravel so I have large tufts of Java/Christmas and Riccia moss for them to burrow under

You could always do a glass dish of sand as well to see if they would like that

@Miska has named my second wizard Burrfoot.
The activity and level of activity using sand substrate in these vs the old group on bare bottom or even gravel I’m very surprised. Constantly digging. So I’m guessing in nature their preferred food source live in the sandy mucky substrate.

Hey @Chick-In-Of-TheSea I was just looking at the picture of the first WW baby and doesn’t this look an awful lot like Nibbles?  Does Nibbles have striped antennas?

No, they are black.

Your next White Wizard snail baby should be named Gandalph. 😉
