Slick_Nick
Hey guys I’ve had my 29g aquarium set up for 11 months now and I’ve had my pair of rams in there for about 8 of those months. I had a Monte Carlo carpet going and it looked great, but I slacked on keeping it trimmed and the last time I trimmed it there was yellow underneath and before it could grow back it started lifting from the substrate so Sunday I pulled it all out. there was quite the mess underneath and my Corys had a hay day stirring it all up. I syphoned as much put as possible and then added another filter to help clear up the tank and it’s looking much better today. I replanted it with dwarf hair grass the whole reason I’m mentioning all this is because my male German blue ram has lost his dorsal extensions in the past few days and I’m curious if it was due to the messy water before the filters got everything cleared up again and also wondering if they will grow back. I took a video on Sunday and he still had his extensions I looked in this morning and noticed they are not there anymore I’ll post a pic from about a week ago and then this morning you can see how long they once were. I appreciate any help I can get I love these guys!
Fish Folk
Looks like trouble. So sorry to say. Pectoral fins have some rot. Rams are susceptible to bacterial infections. If you have a QT tank, you might try treating. My experience would not give you much hope with him. I lost a male Ram I'd raised up from scratch just a few weeks ago. He'd been leaning sickly . . . and just disappeared. I'm reasonably sure plecos and MTS finished him off at night. What are those lovely red / pink plants you've got in the background? I feel like I ought to know . . . but they're so amazing in your tank.

That’s really a bummer I actually just took 2 tanks down because I am moving in a couple of months and have already started packing stuff up so I don’t have a separate tank to treat him in at the moment. I guess I’ll just keep a close eye on him. Maybe doing that kind of maintenance while keeping them in the tank wasn’t the best idea? The pink stems in the background are rotala narrow leaf sp red. It’s the only rotala I can actually get to turn pink. I tried blood red and h’ra and didn’t have any success I’m assuming they needed much lower nitrates to turn pink or red. Thank you for your help I was nervous it wasn’t going to be good.
Slick_Nick
I wanted to give an update on my male GBR. His dorsal fin is getting its color back and looks like its healing now! I didn’t use any medication just did my weekly water change and fed him well. I’m so happy to see improvement!
