Plant ID help, please!

Recommended Posts

I recently went shopping and came home with 3 'bonus' mystery plants in with my other purchases. I could use some help IDing them.

I think this one may be Red Root Floater. What do you guys think?

This one looks to me like it's meant to be floating. I have no idea what it is. None of the 'Best Floating Plants' lists I found last night had one that looked like it.

I think this one may be part of a stem plant. It has roots coming from at least 2 different places.

If more pictures are needed let me know and I can make it happen.

1. Definitely red root floater, Phyllanthus fluitans.

2. May be water wisteria, Hygrophila difformis.  It takes on different leaf shape/forms if growing emerse vs submerse and can also have transitional leaves.  This growth looks like emerse growth.

3.  I’m bad at stems so defer to others on this one.  Looks like a good guess from @Fish Folk on Rotala indica.

Hmm. It doesn't look anything like the emersed photos I'm finding, but maybe transitional? Should I plant it then?

You can grow it either way you want.  I personally like the finer, more filigreed look from submerse growth.  It usually grows the submerse foliage when floating.  It has to be fully emerse for a while to get to the emerse foliage form.  Just barely popping out will still be submerse form.

Could this be broad leaf water sprite? I know they had some planted in the same tank as the narrow leaf I bought, but this hitchhiked in a bag from a different tank.

Could be?  I’m terrible at stem plants.  I just know water wisteria is quite variable, but your idea would fit, too.  Looks fairly likely in fact.

My first thought when I saw that one was Mexican Oak Leaf.

Edit:  I just realized I hadn't removed the first picture.
