Taia naticoides Piano snails another adventure

Recommended Posts

So I’m really thinking my bumpy little guy is a different type of snail than the other two.  The little bumpy one is slightly smaller, lighter colored and well bumpy.  The other two still have darker vibrantly striped shells, are slightly larger and completely smooth.

I would agree that he sure does look like a piano snail as you previously mentioned.  Odd how he got mixed in with the rest of the gang?  I suppose when they're small you can't tell these snails apart.

The white guppy snails are so pretty.

All three were sent from the wholesaler to the store as pagoda snails. So I think these were extra hitchhikers the wholesaler got and just sent to whatever store never complained about mislabels 🤣

When I got my Bolivian ram, there was no label or anything on the tank. I just knew what they looked like.  The associate got confused as to how to ring it up and whether they should believe me about what it was.  I think they ultimately rang it up as a red ram.  Eh.  It was about the same price I expected it to be, so I didn't care.

Here is pictures of all three close together to see the difference.  Cruller was mounting one of the other ones most of the day yesterday so safe to say that Cruller is a boy.
Im wondering if any viable offspring since I don’t know if these are the same or not or definitely what they are or if the other was even a girl.

Hmm. Snails don't usually cross breed with other snail species, do they?

Only occasionally I think Colombian ramshorn and spixi can but don’t quote me. I’m just not certain if these are the same snails or not. The foot face antennae and behavior are identical just the shells look different.  I don’t know enough about VV or piano to ID with any confidence at all.

I do. 🤣. This tank is only 6 inches off the floor. I sit there sometimes so long I fear my old body may not be capable of unfolding and standing back up 😲

I have found my sixty year old body be more nimble since I started having tanks. Who needs yoga??? 🤪

So I have news. These are not Viviparus Viviparus so no Guppy snails @OnlyGenusCaps  on the upside I’m relatively positive these are Taia natacoides piano snails. the other two are starting to show slight bumps on the shells. The whorls are not as bulbous as pictures of Viviparus viviparus. The more I look the more I’m convinced so sad about a common name of Guppy snails going by the wayside but WOOHOO Piano snails🤩

Im going to count myself fortunate and keep my fingers crossed that I am correct.

Tomorrow I’m going to change the thread title and as soon as I find folks to adopt the rest of my magenta mystery snails and the 10 juvenile CPD in my funny tank I will pull the white wizards to that tank. These guys get that new cube all to themselves with only neocaridina and 1 black racer nerite roommate.

Now I REALLY want to get these guys to breed 🥰

Congrats!!

So these snails are born live with a shell but the ww are born without shell?

Live with shell. But so are the WW. Either what I thought were babies were deformed or bladder snails that got crushed from a falling snail. 🤷‍♀️

That’s awesome. How often do you think they will have a baby? I know for rabbit snails it’s like one per month but then MTS are another story. 🤣

What the internet says is one every few weeks. I really don’t know beyond that. It just showed up so I don’t know who had it other than Cruller is a boy. I have not seen the other two attempt mating so they may or may not both be girls.

I noted prior the gh in this tank seems to deplete quicker than other snail tanks. I thought it was possible being only 5 gallons vs 10 could be the issue.  They did consume the nano blocks quicker. So perhaps they require more cal/mag than other snails due to shell density and thickness.
I got samples of Crayfish Empire calcium chips (calcium carbonate, spirulina and gelatin) with my spixii snails.  I put one in each tank and all the snails liked it so I ordered more.
At lights out last night I put another in each tank and the WWs had devoured it by lights on. And we’re in a pile where the chip had been. This was unusual as they usually do their own thing. I put another in and those that had started to wander off turned and came back to devour more. The piano snails in with them munched a bit as expected but continued on with their day same as mystery and spixii in other tanks. The WW I’m thinking need A LOT more cal/mag than other snails.
