Froggirl
Hello everyone, I've had this in the tank for quite a while now, I picked it off once and it reappeared in a different spot a bit later. It's only present on this specific piece of drift wood and currently only in this spot. Any idea what this is, if it's harmful and how to get rid of it if so? Thanks in advance! Guppysnail
It kind of just looks like the natural biofilm that grows on wood. It eventually goes away on its own. It’s not harmful if that is what it is. Shrimp and snails find it yummtastic 1

So I'm not 100% sure about it being biofilm anymore
Biotope Biologist
Looks like biofilm to me too. Perhaps they haven't found it yet, or perhaps their priorities lie elsewhere. What is that vase looking thing? I find my eyes wandering to it.

Hmm they do have a lot of food present in the tank already so they might just not be interested in it that much.. thanks! It's an oxydator, I bought it when I first started my aquarium but apparently it doesn't really do much so it's just kinda there.
Biotope Biologist
An oxydator is new to me! Neat! They look pretty at least, but yeah judging by the brief synopsis, it's snake oil using chemical equations and everything. Might be useful in a nano reef setup though.

Yeah I'm just using it until the refills are used up.. the things they sell newbies..
Torrey
@Froggirl it really does look like normal wood immersed in water kind of growth. This growth is why I regularly put new wood into tanks with fry, snails, or shrimp. It's an available food source for when they are ready... and it doesn't foul the water😁

I suppose I can rest easy now!
Torrey
I went to my NANF shrimp tank to get you some pictures. 3 different kinds of biofilm/bacterial growths (and a little fungus above the water line, snails seem to appreciate it) on this wood. When I first set this tank up for breeding the shrimp, I had a massive bacterial bloom. Extra oxygen cleared the water overnight, and also eliminated the growth on the wood. Notice there's only bacterial growth on the wood and dwarf lilies below the oxygen stone. See the cute little shrimplettes! The two purple arrows are NANF Palaemonetes paludosus shrimplettes born last night😁 They appear to be zeroing in on the bacteria on the wood.

I did catch a shrimp snacking on the white fluff today, thank you for assuring me. And congratulations on the baby shrimps! Hopefully I will have some babies soon as well!
