Fish Folk
I have 2x amazing LFS in our town. I adore them both, and do my best to split my spending equally between them. Today I dropped in and bought a bunch of necessities. I thought I’d share a few unique fish they have in store… Flowerhorn… Pike Cichlid… Vieja… Juvenile Electric Blue Jack Dempsey… (I can’t remember her species-name… but she’s amazing…) (Update! She’s a Green Terror. I’m persuaded these are the most social, intelligent fish to keep as “wet pets.”) Australian Arowana… Giant Pacu… Baby giant Gourami… (My brain is slow… can’t remember what these are called… very large specimens!) oh yeah! Patrick_G
This got me thinking about what large fish would be compatible with planted tanks. Any ideas?
Fish Folk
@Patrick_G good question! I’d not entrust plants to the Vieja. The Redheads move a load of substrate all around. I’d like to imagine that the Arowana could do fine with plants. They prefer the upper 1/3 of the aquarium. Maybe a big “grove” of tall, well-rooted Valisneria could work for these species. @Atitagain has some beautiful scapes in larger tanks that might work. Typically though, I don’t see big fish with many plants. That Giant Gourami was inches long… but it grows FEET long!

Blood Parrot Cichlids The Pacu are still babies.I had a pair that were 23” long and 5.5” wide. I donated them to an aquarium that rehab injured manatees the black Pacu are huge people should look them up. The red belly shown were very cool and very smart. I have mixed feelings about sales of them as almost no one in the us can support the size of tank needed with it being common to need 1000 gal tanks. I also had the luck to have two and enjoy them. I wish education was better. I love the pics @Fish Folkthe flower horn is my favorite but I have never whated to keep one for some reason. I have seen them in channels here but the colors tend to be not as bright.
Fish Folk
@Brandon p I agree completely. Several of these fish probably should not be easily available in the hobby. Ohio Fish Rescue has quite a number of cautionary tales!
Kurt Brutting
Awesome pics! I see clown loaches all the time at petco and I know those poor fish are being sold like crazy. I have a very good LFS and he sells some larger fish but he has tons and tons of knowledge to share so you know what your buying when your buying it.
Brandon p
There are 2 at lest sub species of clown loaches and one gets so huge the second is smaller but they are to big for many tanks On 6/24/2022 at 9:27 PM, Fish Folk said: @Brandon p I agree completely. I know better know but when I was younger I had some fish I should not have. I am still gald I had them and I feel like an adult saying that people should have them. To much adulting.

Thank you very much, I have been trying different plants: floating, groups of stems, rhizomes, and rooted. I’ve had most success with rooted. Protecting them with being very well rooted is most important IMO. If fish are introduced young then you can get smaller plants. my set up for my Oscar (8-10ish inches), 75G pothos hanging from back is a good choice as well, lucky bamboo on the left, and vallisneria in a pot that is very long and established root system. I capped the soil with gravel then 1-2” stones around the plant in the pot then larger rocks to lock everything together. 3

One lady is building a 2000 gallon tank to rehome her 23 year old pacu from a 1000 gallon tank; I'll be setting up a 400 gallon tank for my clown loaches. Patrick_G
Even with the best intentions it can be hard to do the tank upgrades necessary to keep these large fish. My six goldfish are going to need to upgrade from their 100 gal pond very soon. In my climate they don’t grow very fast but I’ll still need to triple the size of their pond. Odd Duck
I have a Jack Dempsey pair, a couple common plecos, and some young tiger silver dollars in a 75 gallon. The Jacks and dollars would be better off in a bigger tank but it’s what I could get at that time. They may eventually get an upgrade (sshh, don’t tell my hubby, yet). They would have been better getting plants established before adding fish, but I didn’t have that option. The tank was inspired by @dasaltemelosguytanks in his thread on reducing nitrates with emerse plants. My 75 is needing some work, yet. I need to get my fishroom done and set up with auto-water changes. 🤷🏻♀️ I need a young person’s ambition and gitty-up and not just my old lady ideas and schemes. 6
Brandon p
It’s great when people can upgrade. In Sarasota Fl they used to take Pacu in and allow them in the same tank. Mote marine lab changed to make the exhibit(rehab and home for injured manatees. If they can be released they are) but I did see this from Germany. You can’t see the difference in size. If you have never seen a manatee there are huge the size of 2 cows.

I think those are black Pacu which grow much bigger than the red belly ones that still get huge. I’m not sure I have ever seen black Pacu at any fish store. I just look quickly and I didn’t see any black Pacu on eBay but on google there were at least 10 places to buy for less than $20

I kept large vals and swords with my discus. It takes longer to acclimate the plants to warmer water than the discus to harder water... and totally worth it. Duckweed works too🤣 Test with lettuce, first. If they don't eat the lettuce, plants will probably be safe as long as fish aren't underfed *and* plants are well established before fish are added (or plants are established when fish are small).

Large is relative; I've been thinking chocolate cichlid (Hypselecara temporalis); not nearly as large as pacu - some might say tiny - but certainly larger than guppies.
