anitstuk
Hello Everyone, I got my Java Fern and attacked it to a rock around 3 weeks ago. Ever since I got it, it has appeared to melt away. It has got black spots all over it and it is droopy.. Can anyone help with this?
Administrators Zenzo Posted June 21, 2022 Administrators Share Posted June 21, 2022 It is probably lacking nutrients. Because Java fern feeds from the water column, consider using a fertilizer like Easy Green or whatever you have available where you live.
Torrey
Most likely lack of nutrients based on your description. What are your water parameters? Tank inhabitants? Age of tank? Maintenance and fert schedule? What is your source water, and what are the parameters of your source water?
Kurt Brutting
I struggled with Java Fern and I found out I was keeping them to hot. I had them in my clown loach aquarium and running at 83 degrees was just to hot for them. Now I keep them in my community setups only around 77 - 78 degrees and it’s a big difference. Mine also like a little extra potassium dosed.

We are at 0ppm Ammonia, 0ppm nitrite and 25ppm nitrate. The ph is 6.8 as well. We began cycling the tank around 6 or 7 weeks ago but we add the shrimp 1 week ago. We have done a 25% water change around 2 days ago and we haven't added any fertilisation. On 6/22/2022 at 11:27 AM, anitstuk said: The tank is a small 3 gallons with 6 cherry shrimp.. Patrick_G
They take a while to adjust to a new tank. I always get some melt, black spots etc. They’re grown in air and need time to acclimate to being grown underwater. I trim off the dead leaves and dose some extra potassium like @Kurt Brutting suggested. They’re marketed as beginner plants and it’s true that they’re hard to kill, but keeping them looking perfect can be tough.
TeeJay
Yes adding the extra potassium definitely does help. I added to my regular schedule with easy green and root tabs for my heavy root feeders. Now my javas sprout baby plants all the time Edited June 22, 2022 by TeeJay
