Age guesstimation?

Probably 2-3 weeks

ETA: Could be 4 weeks at most. Guess I shoulda noted it in my journal when I pulled the eggs!

OMG THERE'S 2 BABYFISH!!!!

I had put 2 eggs in there but we'd only seen one baby & I figured I was lucky to get that. I'm just sitting here eating dinner & watching the tank. The baby comes out quite a bit now that it's getting bigger. Guess that's what regular feeding does.. poor things survived off of whatever the first couple weeks. So I'm watching it do Cory things & then I think I see a flicker out the corner of my eye. No way...  So I start watching more intently. I'm like this is such an active little babyfish, it's all over the tank, ducks behind something & pops out the other side of the tank a second later... and then I see two at the same time!!! Undeniably two baby Corys!!! I can't even believe it! I'm so glad they have a friend!

Is there any dedicated feeding happening?

Since I found the 1st one, I've been feeding a little smooshed up repashy twice a day & a few frozen daphnia when I'm feeding it to the other tanks (2-3x week).

Personally I tend to use BBS, but I might switch to daphnia if it seems to work better…?

Daphnia is the smallest food I have on hand. But I could pick up BBS this weekend. They're growing fast though, I'd say they're up to 7-8mm now.

Wow! If they’re at that size maybe give them a smallish food tab. Do they have any tank mates?

Just ramshorn snails, which are about to have a population explosion since I've been feeding fairly heavy.

There's probably a decent population of "water bugs" in this tank (see the 1st posts in this thread) which is what they must've survived off of the 1st couple weeks.

Repashy is a sinking food, I feel like it's higher quality than a lot of prepared dry foods. I have the Bottom Scratcher variety which is a good mix of invert proteins & seaweeds. I guess I should research this a bit more though. Shows you how much I really didn't expect to get baby fish from tossing 2 eggs in the tank!

Any fry food hikari first bites, northfin fry starter, easy fry sprinkled throughout the tank is good for fry. That way they can find good wherever they are.
so cute🥰

I’ve also tried Sera Micron, which I think works pretty well. It’s so small I can’t see the fry eat it without glasses, and the fry seem to survive…

Just pulled 3 more Cory eggs! Tricked my fish by being home on a Monday 😅

Oh shoot! Looked up for a second & totally witnessed the breeding behavior & then the female swimming around with the egg clamped in her fins. She swam around with it for a bit. Then she ducked behind the filter & I couldn't see if it where she laid it. Looks like they laid some there earlier though, there's a distinctive white residue with circular shapes in it. That's how I know they lay eggs pretty regularly but they're always gone by the time I get home from work.

  • 2 months later...

Big day today! Went to the co-op. Brought them my 2 SAE so I could free up some space in my tanks. Catching them took some patience, but actually wasn't as bad as I feared. Had to take the driftwood out but at least I didn't have the uproot all the plants.

The space freed up in the 29 allowed me to get a Sunset Honey Gourami for that tank. Nice to have a centerpiece fish in that tank again.

Other big news: I got one of my bucket list species! The Tequila Goodeid, Zoogoneticus tequila. Not the flashiest fish, but it's a conservation species which interests me. These came right from Cory's fish room, via Dean's fish room, which feels pretty special. They're my 1st livebearer (not counting the 3 male guppies) & one of the females is huge, so it probably won't be long until I have fry! I got 2 males (orange stripe on their tail) & 4 females. They're staying pretty well hidden, so hopefully they get comfortable in coming days so I can get better pics

Aaand I finally got my shrimp! Blue Velvet Neocaridinas. Looks like one female is already berried, so will hopefully have more of them soon too!

I got the new co-op light for the 29 & some new plants: java moss, crypt spiralis, Anubias hastifolia, & red flame sword

Better pics of everything in the coming days!

I was so surprised when I found a baby Cory myself in my 29 gal tank. I have a 10 gal setup for Cory's only to try and breed. So when I found one in my main tank I almost squealed. I have 9 in each tank. I was feeding the main tank one night and I saw it out of the corner of my eye. Somehow this guy made it from egg to dang near a juvinile all on its own. Because when I found it, it was pretty much a half inch long. I guess I can chalk that up to plenty of plants and hiding places to lay eggs and not get eaten.

I definitely squealed when I saw the 1st baby 😅 I've watched them lay eggs in the main tank though, and either the female that laid the egg or one of the other corys is always right there to eat the eggs as soon as they're laid. I wondered if they're not getting enough nutrition? I just picked up the Repashy Spawn & Grow, thinking that might give them a boost. I should probably feed blood worms more often too.

The spawn and grow is good stuff. I try not to feed bloodworms more than twice a week if I'm using spawn and grow as well so I don't overdue the protein and fat imo

Good point. I usually feed bloodworms about twice a week too, and then frozen daphnia a couple days & frozen spirulina brine a couple days. The frozen foods I feed in the evening. In the morning I feed repashy bottom scratcher. So maybe I'll do the spawn & grow on the days I'm going to feed daphnia. That'll probably be a good balance.

The Tequila Goodeids have warmed up! They were stoked for some bloodworms

The Tequila Goodeids have already figured out who the food human is - they come right up to the front of the tank when I show up.

Hard to get good pics of the shrimp, but they seem to be doing fine. Their heater showed up this morning so I stepped the temp up to 68 & will step it up another few degrees over the next couple days

The Honey Gourami is doing well, but is quite shy, so I'll have to do some quiet sitting by the tank to try & get good pics.

I just wanted to thank @laritheloud @Hobbit & @Guppysnail for your input on my honey gourami on guppysnail's journal, just didn't want to derail her thread further 😅

As is the case any time I get a new species of fish, I'm finding I'm enjoying the honey more than I expected to. Every fish is so unique & interesting in their own right. So I'm totally open to adding more, just want to make sure it'll work out well in my tank & not be overcrowded. I'll keep thinking on it. Thank you all!

We have Goodeid fry!!! I've been watching this big mama for a while thinking, gosh she must be ready soon. This morning I went to feed the tank & she was markedly smaller, so I started scouring the tank & found at least 3 or 4 fry. I added a bunch more stems & floaters from other tanks & moved some medium size rocks around to try & make hides. I'll be feeding the tank extra heavy for a bit to keep the adults full. Hopes, prayers & fingers crossed these fry make it! She had to be pregnant before I bought her, so these fry likely bring some extra genetic diversity to the mix.
