J. Holmes
We’ve had our tanks set up for about 7 months. Java ferns in place about 6 months. Water parameters are all 0. We backed lights down to about 6 hours (it was 12) about two weeks ago. our java ferns have never been happy. I’m not sure if it’s the lighting or the water. All our other plants have thrived, but the javas are angry. We use easy green about every two weeks. The javas in spider wood are shoved into a hole (not glued). The other on drift wood have a tiny dot of glue to hold them on. what can we do to help these guys out?
Theplatymaster
you need nitrate for them, they have a nutrient deficiency you could do something like Easy Green, or add more fish, but make sure you have nutrients for them to eat

Is another way to add it?
TeeJay
For me my javas do pretty well. I dose easy green once a week but have found adding a bit of extra potassium has helped them as well. I only use half of the recommend dose of potassium for my tank size of 29gal.
Anjum
If your nitrates are reading 0 but you're dosing ferts, it's likely the other plants are taking up the nutrients faster than the Java can get to it (being a slower growing plant). You can try dosing more ferts, but it's possible the faster growing plants will just grow that much faster. I'd try it, but maybe just plan to move the Java out if it doesn't improve.
John Henry
Your Java Fern may be struggling but the val?/sag? in the background looks fantastic! TeeJay's suggestion of more potassium sounds like a good first move.
Odd Duck
Those Val’s and stems are likely to be eating all the fertilizer faster than the Java fern can. I’d start dosing more often. Some people are using smaller doses more often, even several times weekly. But I’d start with going to at least weekly. If you don’t see improvement, dose every 6 days, then every 5 days if that’s not enough, until you find the right balance. You may need to move them to another tank that has plants with a less greedy nature. 😝

Can confirm this worked for me. I was worried about adding too much fertilizer in my 10 Gallon aquarium before and my Java Fern was going black. Ever since I did one pump a week AND now that I have a higher stocking level, it has been growing and propagating.
Georgiapeach88
Glad I found this mine were struggling in my guppy tank. Guess they needed a tad more than the nitrates.
