Ina
I have a 45tall tank. I have an undergravel with 2 good power heads and a good sized sponge filter in the back corner powered by air pump. It is planted with living plants….Do I need the hob filter also. TYIA
Beardedbillygoat1975
No I don't think so. That seems quite adequate. Good water movement from the powerheads and the sponges would provide a ton of oxygenation + the UGF would give you great biological filtration. I think you may have to stay up on vacuuming the top of the substrate especially if you find some dead spots where detritus congregated.

Ken Burke
Are you having any problems with your current setup? I wouldn’t mess with it unless you are having difficulties.
Brian
I’ve used under gravel filters since I was a kid. With proper maintenance (gravel vacuum) these filters can run for years. You will find once the plants settle in they will thrive.
