Hi Nerms!

I've read the ACO article about raising daphnia a few times but I got some from a lovely local supplier and somehow killed all of them overnight. May I please see pics of your setup?

If you are a member of the Aquarium Co-Op YouTube channel, we will be learning about daphnia culturing from an expert this August.

Out of all the great speakers you have had or have lined up, this is literally my most looked forward to meeting! Can't wait, hoping to catch it live with pen and notebook in hand haha but so far I've only managed to watch them all after the fact (stupid shift work/time zones 😑).

Side note, really enjoyed your last few videos about stocking ideas etc (on the 'more' channel? Can't remember) keep up the good work! I love that you have some more non-typical ideas compared with other tubers!

I have heard that moina are just as good (and same process) as daphnia but much more hardy/tolerant of stocking density, temperature and varying water parameters. I didn't have any luck with my first daphnia attempt either so going to try moina as soon as I got some more green water going!

Here is my setup that I’ve been running for 3-4 years now. A 10 gallon tank that sits on a stand next to my pond filter.

Sure if you are lucky enough to live in San Francisco and the weather is equitable year round.  Next tell us about your beautiful outdoor African cichlid pond when you move to Hawai'i.  🤣

Daphnia raising expert you say...  That might be enough to get my off my rear to join...

I am trying to make it out there permanently! I was just there for 6 days to visit my family. And yes...I saw cichlids in outdoor ponds! 😜

I know you are.  That wasn't a random pick - it was a premonition.  😀

One of my relatives over there has a pond full of Peacocks it was interesting to see them from a top down view rather than your normal aquarium perspective.

newest version will be a 47.5"x10" unused foldable dog pool pond. Not yet set up.

Is that an air stone you have in there? I read that daphnia can die if the bubbles are too fine. Can you adjust the bubbles?

Keep me updated about your success with green water. I've heard that it can be tough to get, unless you don't want it, of course. 😆

Well I didn't want it really but decided to capitalise and try to make a green water culture out of it haha

Of course now I'm trying to keep it going it will probably disappear!

I do a coop medium sponge filter currently and have the airstone with the felt disks in there with light flow and big bubbles. I havent noticed a daphnia die off from that bubble size up here.

This is a  container dipped in randomly from the top and through the duckweed. There are probably 50 in the container

Here is my temperature history for the past 24 hours from my bluetooth tempersture probe. They have a 20-25⁰ temperature swing every day with their max around 6pm and the minimum around 6am

Wow! Tell me more about the Bluetooth temperature probe. That sounds like something I really need to Nerm out on and get.

Its a "bluetooth temperature probe" for a smoker grill etc. They are those metal spike deals you stick in whatever you are cooking in a smoker etc so you csn see its tempersture without letting the heat/smoke out.

Its probably unnessary but I put it in a ziplock / fish bag to keep the water off it. I figure it lasts longer if i do that.  They are all basically $10-$12 and use one AAA battery to power the bluetooth part of it. Some new ones have audible alarms for preset temperatures so you could have it alarm by your tank/ pond if it exceeded a preset temperature you set in the app. Like if a heater failed in the on position.

Is that like an inkbird or not really?

Basically. This is the one that monitors my pond for me i ran acfoss it when it was something like $12. I got it a couple of years ago. Really anything bluetooth with an external temperature probe would work. There are many out there with more features these days

Close the temp probe is the key part for the water temps.  I do use that one linked for the fishroom. I use it to keep track of humidity mostly. But it does air temp, relative humidity, dew point, and vapor pressure deficit. That last one i guess is the difference between the water vapor pressure at saturation and the actual water vapor pressure for a given temperature. Theoretically a more accurate RH measurement
