Corbidorbidoodle Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 I work next door to a landscape rockery place and they've got lots of stuff that'd look really cool in a tank. I wanna ask what're some things to avoid when selecting rocks. I remember reading, or watching somewhere the rocks should be harder than your pocket knife, and to avoid rocks with sparkly bits. Any other guidelines you guys know of? Oh, and here's some of the cool stuff I saw. Obviously most of it is very big, but there are small bits and crumbs everywhere.
L_goodei200 Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 Shale, Sandstone, and river rock/glacial till should be fine, limestone is fine if you are ok with hard water
nabokovfan87 Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 ^^ I avoid rocks with the calcium veins as much as I can. Pretty much the rest of it should be fine. I do like your rule about hardness. There are some rocks that are very crumbly (petrified wood for instance). I have a aquascaping book, I'll try to find it, with some details on rocks common to the hobby that aren't necessarily available here. A lot of those rocks you're showing look like stuff FishForThought used on his betta tank series. He did a stack of them and wedged plants on it. Looks really cool. Stacking them like Jenga blocks and leaving gaps where you want to. Aesthetically, extremely nice rocks!
