How to start growing plants for profit

I’ll start by saying that my intention, for now, is to dabble and research.

Do people start out with seeds of some sort? (Ive seen seed packs for things like baby tears and other carpets). If I wanted to start with an easy grower like, say, java fern.. would I just get a few mother plants and start planting the babies they produce into pots and do it that way? How do folks start?
