10 Jug Rack System

Recommended Posts

With small breeding projects I do, a handful of fish do fine with fry hatching or growing out at room temperature. I built a Jug Shelf system based success I found over the last several years setting jugs out here and there in my fishroom…

This inspired a dedicated shelf primarily  for fry from Nothobranchius rachovii…

After adding substrate leftovers, primed sponge filters, airlines, Pothos cuttings, java moss, Catappa leaves, heat-tape, and a thermostat… here is a video overview…

(Sorry that video kind of trailed off… my phone actually konked out 😂)

Looking smart! And it seems like there’s room for another shelf? Perhaps there’s not enough space for a light… That’s an awesome project! And those fish look absolutely gorgeous - they almost make me want to branch out from million fish!

Definitely going to be using your video as a reference when I find the space to put together something similar!

Oh! How often do you run water changes on that system? I imagine it depends on what’s being homed in those jugs, but with say a batch of 20 fry or so? Do you keep mated pairs in there until they drop their eggs and move them once they hatch? Unless this process is described in the video, I’ll find out then.

Regardless, that’s radical bruh!

I'm still learning how to best manage it. With water changes, right now, I am just topping off with water from across the room in my Discus tank...

As for another shelf, you're right! I might be able to do that. But I'd really like to set up a small aquaponics system above the 33 gal underneath, so I'm trying to save space for something like this (sorry for the scrappy sketch)...

You might want to checkout what Lucas Brett's did with the scientific rearing containers used for Zebrafish (AKA as we know them Zebra Danios), the gutter setup looked fairly cheap and easy to do. You should be able to bulkhead the jugs easy enough and have overflows to a gutter for the system you've drawn above. A setup like that means you can pull the jugs without having to disconnect piping.

Scrappy sketch?! You’ve even taken into account water flow!

Can’t wait to see the system with a little jungle below and full of those beautiful fish!

Just top-offs huh? Makes sense, once things are absolutely coated with beneficial bacteria it should be smooth sailing! Definitely going to set something up like this myself - in due time!

I just want to know where you got your jugs/what kind of jugs?

System looks pretty awesome, if I can ever get my shelves/rack from Costco🤦‍♂️

I priced out everything, and even with the $100 jump in price, it's still cheaper than DIY.

But.

I got the jugs from Chick-fil-a. It’s what they sell their tea and lemonade in. My friend is a manager, and gave me a dozen to play around with.
